Like the age-old chicken-and-egg debate, poets often discuss whether form or content comes first. Though perhaps an unanswerable question, Alexis Sears will use this workshop to explore it.

Intertextual Petals by Kay Medway In a library, I realise I read and reread books with titles like Wild Moon Rising, especially, I think to myself, to inspire a future poem of mine. What I like about books like Wild Moon Rising are Jenny Knight’s words: “smattered with white pink petals so thin she thought of the diaphanous dresses of golden‑age film stars.” Her line opens something in me. Petals so thin she has seen she would think of diaphanous dresses, and from her petals I begin my own imagining. They make me picture moth wings the colour of my bohemian skirt in a summer evening reprieve, walking past flats painted in rust‑orange colours. Before her words, I still wrote of grass as adorned to me as if in its garb, as if pierced, punctuated, lightly punctured, but only the way ear lobes sometimes are, for glass‑like, tear‑like, beady‑sized gems to shine from their grass‑stem openings, and upon them, as if I memorise her glassy‑eyed grass.

The first time I travelled, rapeseed flowers, řepka, rose far above my shoulders, behind me, higher than the strands of my once white‑blonde hair. Řepka glowing in front of the arches of windows near the pointed entrance and the towers, a little flash of light showing what I loved, řepka everywhere, sure as a birthday in summer. I was overjoyed as a princess, leaning and laughing toward a camera at a distance, a halo of řepka around me. This is how fairytales and folklore translate onto earth. I stood alive in an alice band of řepka, behind me the castle of South Bohemia, and later the horse and carriage rides of Prague, the puppets and the oldest clocks. I cared only for daydreams of horses and castles, never knowing how far away this magic would one day feel.

rapeseed flowers, řepka, rose far above my shoulders,
behind me, higher than the strands of my once white‑blonde hair.

Behind door number one, a burgundy and mauve, shiny, medium‑sized‑wheeled doll’s pram. Behind door number two, Doll Susan, who could walk and say “mama.” Behind door number three, feeling for oranges, apples, and nuts at the bottom of a red stocking. Behind door number four, Christmas crackers to pull, all in a flame‑red colour. Behind door number five, Christmas pudding on a table of loved ones. Behind door number six, a coal fire with a brassy guard and chestnuts to roast. Behind door number seven, real Christmas trees with always, always a red bucket. Behind door number eight, two tall, separate piles of wrapped presents for twins. Behind door number nine, decorations from a 1960s Christmas swaying across the ceiling. Behind door number ten, my mum at the helm, cooking Christmas dinner for eight children. Behind door number eleven, naughtiness on the bridge, born from wanting a watch. Behind door number twelve, paper party hats. Behind door number thirteen, a teddy named John. Behind door number fourteen, a tortoise in the garden. Behind door number fifteen, a dream for a dog to call Rex. Behind door number sixteen, a pair of vintage elves tucked in the tree. Behind door number seventeen, a nursery rhyme: “Fly away, Peter; fly away, Paul.” Behind door number eighteen, a family member calling down the lane. Behind door number nineteen, friends playing together on a doorstep. Behind door number twenty, a red, round‑cheeked Santa for the tree from a store. Behind door number twenty‑one, a sequinned, upcycled chocolate box. Behind door number twenty‑two, a row of candles in a window. Behind door number twenty‑three, a gift voucher in a good envelope. Behind door number twenty‑four, a pantomime‑merchandise fairy godmother wand. Behind door number twenty‑five, a phone call like clockwork at six each evening.
