currently obsessed with the song "Half Life" by Djo- I love the sharp transitions between soft washing verse to rhythmic, punchy chorus, but there is ONE SPECIFIC MOMENT IN THISE SONG THAT I AM ADDICTED TO. on the line "The world is changing... and upgrading... faster than we can control..." there's a very specific semichord chord change from minor to major and it's SO ADDICTIVE because of how softly it's sung, along with the gentle, hypnotizing backing track at this point, with the soft faux-new wave synth climbing up in a little ascending pattern afterwards- UGH IT'S SO GOOD BUT MAINLY... THE BEST THING ABOUT IT!!!! is the contradiction between the chord change and the lyrics. If we think about it, a usual thing to write over a minor to major key change is something positive. bad to good, hopeful. and that's how it sounds- Hopeful. ... but what he's talking about in that lyric is the disconnection of humans because of how quickly a digital life has overcome our species... SO WHYYYYY DOES IT SOUND SO HOPEFUL?? WELL, FRANKLY?... I don't know. It could be plenty of things. One idea is that it's hinting at the addiction. the addiction the human species has to progress, efficiency, constantly changing everything, making it better, improving, refining, inventing. and the addiction to digital media too of course. another idea is that he could genuinely believe that it's going to end up changing for the better. another idea is that he finds the fact that it's out of our 'control' somehow a relief, the idea that we can do nothing about it relaxing. I just don't know. But I'm thrilled by it everytime.
