RING WITH PTOLEMAIC PRINCESS, 300-280 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI TARANTO This gold ring was found at Mottola near Taranto in 1936 as part of a burial with other luxury items, a gold necklace and gold bracelet. It shows a woman's head in profile facing right. She has beautiful features, a bit fleshy, and is wearing a necklace and a peplos which is faintly indicated. She has a remarkable hairstyle with cornrows of hair pulled tight into a bun at the back of her head. The only parallels either I or the Archaeological Museum of Taranto can find are with Ptolemaic models. A near-identical gold ring portrait of Berenice I, second wife of Ptolemy I Soter, first king of the last dynasty of Egypt, shows a much older woman with the same hairstyle. This might be one of her daughters before the girl's marriage, as she is not wearing a crown and covering her hair. One daughter married Agathocles, tyrant of Syracuse and then king of Sicily, so there was some link with Magna Graecia.
#ReliefWednesday offers us an intaglio #portrait of an early #Ptolemaic princess, one of the burial goods of a rich woman in #Mottola near #Taranto, where this is on display at the @museo_marta. At the least it indicates trade between the coalescing Ptolemaic empire and #Taras. #AncientBluesky 🏺
In ancient Egypt, cats held a prominent posi-tion, evolving from practical rodent control to becoming revered symbols of protection, di-vinity, and even deities. They were strongly associated with the goddess Bastet, embodying aspects of protection, fertility, and the sun's nurturing power. This reverence led to the mummification of cats and their inclusion in tombs, signifying their importance in both life and the afterlife. The most well-known cat deity was Bastet, often depicted as a woman with a feline head or a lioness. She was associated with protection, especially of the home and family, fertility, and childbirth.

The #Library of Alexandria was established under the #Ptolemaic Dynasty of #Egypt and became the most famous library of the #ancient world, attracting scholars from around the Mediterranean, and making Alexandria the preeminent intellectual center of its time until its decline after 145 BCE.

Moral of the story:
Despite its successes, QM has a consensus & interpretation problem like no other in history. Though it became the darling topic of the media & hype factories, it remains flawed w/both incomplete & inconsistent elements after 100+ years.
It has become more #Ptolemaic over time.
