Did you ever reverse-engineer a CPU & operating system where you didn't know the instruction opcodes, registers, CPU flags, syscall numbers etc.?

CTF Writeup: pwn.college - Advent of Pwn 2025
pwn.college is an educational cybersecurity platform by Arizona State University. Their Advent of Pwn 2025 released one challenge per day during December.

My pwn.college hacking activity dashboard showing a 57 day streak
Not long ago I posted about https://pwn.college I got hooked up with it myself, and I almost got my yellow belt 💛 almost, ‘cause I still have some of the earlier/easier challenges left 😅 I’ll tackle them after the holidays 🏝️ before looking at the more […]

As a side note, since somebody asked… 20 years ago I would’ve (and I have in multiple occasions) recommended the legendary #abo series by gera web.archive.org/web/20150418052653/http:...

— Just overflow the shellcode on the stack and jump to it — Sure grandma let's get you to bed
As an old fart in #xdev, I get asked often, mostly by young coworkers, how to get into binary exploitation in 2025. I looked around, and here’s my recommendation:

Of course, some of this just needs moar #pwncollege (example: we're building Brown Belt material around tackling the security of complex targets), but there's still a fundamental education-to-non-education phase shift that our hackers must overcome. Our interim solution? CTF!
And AZ CTF comes to a close! Congrats to the winners! And, of course, everyone can now tackle the chals on #pwncollege at: pwn.college/az-ctf-2...
Hello hackers! The next #pwncollege Quarterly Quiz IS HERE! Want to test your skills on a clever collection of challenges covering concepts in v8 (chrome's javascript engine) pwning? Head over to pwn.college/quarterl... and get hacking!
#pwncollege, and the ease of creating custom dojos in it, provides a neat solution here! Building off of @sajjadium's amazing file preservation efforts, our researcher Pratham (prathamgupta36.githu...) got challenges running and tested in the dojo, and the CTF Archive was born!
We observe this in Capture the Flag: #pwncollege-trained players definitely have a leg up over a typical newcomer, but there is a missing link between even "applied" education and actual practice. The gap might be one of confidence or lack of exposure to variety, but it's there.
By 2026, ACE will launch a Masters in Applied Computer Security, expanding the pwn-heavy material of #pwncollege into a rounded graduate-level cybersecurity curriculum. As with our current material, all this will be free for use and adoption by other institutions and enthusiasts!
Curriculum Gap: #pwncollege is great at teaching people advanced pwning, and there are platforms (see https://wargame.nexus with other types of hands-on material, but there isn't an unified, applied cybersecurity curriculum that students can pursue in, say, a degree program.
We've started bridging this, first with Linux commandline, #pwncollege style (pwn.college/linux-lu...), and with more to come! The goal, of course, is to make our curriculum accessible to students of any background knowledge. But this is the easy part: we teach for a living!
Input Gap: most cybersecurity coursework requires some amount of CS/IT knowledge. For example, #pwncollege has prereqs determined by where it fits in ASU's CS curriculum. This limits our impact: should not knowing Linux commandline prevent people from tackling our material?
We started hearing crazy stories. Interviewers nerding out with interviewees over shared #pwncollege experiences, hackers neglecting CTF competitions to instead grind #pwncollege, people being inspired to go back to school, change career trajectories, undertake PhDs!
#pwncollege captured lightning in a bottle! Students everywhere watched our lectures, worked through our challenges, helped and got help on our discord, and Learned to Hack! As word spread, @pwncollege grew to be used by tens of thousands of students and universities worldwide!
In 2018, we made https://pwn.college our hands-on paradigm for teaching cybersecurity. This is a great story in itself, and if you're curious about #pwncollege history, check out @TheConnorNelson's PhD proposal (www.youtube.com/watc...) & defense (www.youtube.com/watc...)
The Quarterly Quiz is tougher than expected... but we got your back! @ky1ebot, the author of these challenges, will host a special #pwncollege office hours at 4:30 Arizona time (4:30pm Pacific, 7:30pm Eastern, 23:30 UTC) at twitch.tv/pwncollege! Drop in and pick his brains!
Hello Hackers! The inaugural #pwncollege Quarterly Quiz is LIVE at pwn.college/quarterl...! It’s a series of tough kernel pwning chals from the one and only @ky1ebot, kernel hacker extraordinaire, and will lead you on a journey through Linux kernel pwning and the VFS subsystem!
Hello hackers! Tomorrow, April 1st, at 5pm Arizona time (8pm Eastern), we’ll launch the inaugural #pwncollege Quarterly Quiz! It’ll be a tough set of challenges written by one of the top hackers in the world! Drop by pwn.college/quarterl... tomorrow, or read on for more details!
