According to Holocaust Memorial Day, an estimated 50,000 gay and bisexual men were subjected to severe prison sentences under brutal conditions, often held in police prisons. Of these, around 10,000 to 15,000 were deported to concentration camps, where many perished from exhaustion and abuse. Wherever they were imprisoned, gay and bisexual men faced horrific treatment, including forced medical experiments and castration. The Nazi regime’s efforts to erase LGBTI people from society were facilitated by the use of the Rosa Winkel — the Pink Triangle — one of several cloth badges used to identify and segregate prisoners. Once a mark of persecution, the Pink Triangle has since been reclaimed as a powerful symbol of queer resistance, gaining prominence in 1970s West Germany as a reminder of the violence and oppression faced by the LGBTI community.
