Kabbe South records low voter turnout St Paul’s College in Windhoek won a final zonal quiz in Windhoek, advancing to a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (stem) innovation camp focused on solving real-world challenges through design thinking. The ExxonMobil Foundation’s Stem Africa third and final zonal quiz was held in the capital this past weekend. St Paul’s secured first place and a N$2 400 cash prize, along with a N$2 500 Steam voucher for each participating pupil. This was confirmed in a press statement released by the event’s sponsor, Mindsinaction Steam Centre. “The voucher grants pupils access to a design thinking course aimed at bridging knowledge gaps and strengthening their readiness for the next phase,” the company said. The initiative, in collaboration with JA Africa and Mindsinaction Steam Centre, continued to gather momentum, with the event held at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust). It brought together 12 teams from six high schools across the Khomas region. “Pupils competed for not just cash prizes, but also for the advancement to the innovation camp, scheduled for 26 July, a critical step toward the continental finals set to take place at the Africa Energy Week from 29 September to 3 October in Cape Town, South Africa,” the statement reads. Delta Senior Secondary School and Augustineum Secondary School took first place in the previous zonal quizzes, respectively, and received the same prizes. These three schools, joined by the six others that placed second and third in all quizzes, will participate in the innovation camp, where pupils will design and present prototypes that address real-world community challenges using stem principles. Running from May to October, the ExxonMobil Foundation Stem Africa programme is set to impact over 800 Namibian pupils aged 14 to 18. “In 2024 alone, the initiative reached over 3 000 students continent-wide, with 96.4% reporting increased interest in stem careers and 82.7% citing improved problem-solving abilities. In Namibia, Mindsinaction Steam Centre has facilitated the roll-out of the entire programme from in-school activations and kahoot-based quizzes to the zonal competitions and upcoming innovation camp,” the statement reads. Speaking at the event, Mindsinaction chief executive Ndaudika Mulundileni stressed the importance of reaching beyond urban centres, saying the aim is to reach more regions, particularly rural communities. “We want pupils to understand that education is not just about memorisation, but about using knowledge to solve real problems,” he said. According to the statement, with Namibia having secured second place in last year’s regional finals, expectations are high for this year’s cohort.
