Another bumper year for books in 2024. I’m grateful for my wonderful book club who introduces me to new titles that I otherwise wouldn’t naturally choose, and to everyone in the writing community for making books such a pleasure in my daily routine. #bookclubs #reading2024 #writingcommunity

I've read lots of brilliant books in 2024. These are two of my most enjoyable fiction choices (I'm a sucker for anything to do with #jaws!) #Booksky #Books #reading2024

2024 had been an unusually reading heavy year for me with 132 titles read and more than 31000 pages. Mostly fantasy, some science fiction and some very smutty romance. #reading2024

a large crochet blanket in blues and grey, Cooke's novel on an e-reader

Christmas accomplishments: finished a crochet blanket big enough to hide under. Read C. J. Cooke's The Lighthouse Witches (2020) - partly set during the Scottish witch hunts; motherhood, magic, a curse, superstition, & a generous amount of folklore. no.31 in #Reading2024 #hagsfurieswitches #witchlit

How much did you read this year?

Since readers don’t have their own wrapped, I thought I’d make my own!

It's mostly the usual weird and inventive stuff we expect from Fforde, but the dystopia really breaks out in this one, and the end races along way faster than I expected and was surprisingly poignant. I don't know if its meant to get another book, but I'd definitely like one more.

#Reading2024 - 'Starcross', the second in @philipreeve.bsky.social's YA Larklight trilogy.

Steampunk Victorian-era narrators Art and Myrtle Mumby must deal with a sea-less beach resort on an asteroid, time-travel, French spies, a lost aether ship and sentient top hats.

Ridiculously good fun!

Mohamed's novella on an e-reader, lying on Sheldrake's book, Robinson Crusoe next to both

Finished Premee Mohamed's We Speak Through the Mountain (2024). I liked the 1st installment better (really wanted to find out more about the fungus). Also reading Robinson Crusoe (for a class) & looking at the illustrated version of Entangled Life (for a project). no.29 in #Reading2024 #FungalTexts

Cover of my aged, battered, well-read copy of 'A Wizard of Earthsea' by Ursula Le Guin. This heavily creased and scuffed old Puffin edition provides an excellent example of cover artwork by an artist who did not understand, or possibly didn't actually read, the story in question.

This observation is based on the fact that the character of Ged (aka Sparrowhawk is depicted as a human sized half-man half bird of prey (an event which did not occur in the story) being watched by the characters of Jasper and Vetch, who despite being described repeatedly in the text as having dark brown skin are instead here depicted as white...)

More #reading2024: The classic 'A Wizard of Earthsea' by Ursula K. Le Guin.

A coming of age story about the balance of forces both external and internal, this novel manages to be both gloriously sweeping yet intensely personal.

It's not hard to see why it has been lauded for almost 60 years.

So I finally read Flatland and enjoyed it well enough. I think that film I shared a while ago was a perfectly good way to get the overall impression of the story.

Book Cover to "Shades of Grey".

I first read this 15 years ago, and the sequel finally came out, so I had to reread it to prepare. It's soon good! Absolutely bizarre, and yet it all somehow holds together. Pratchett and Adams and a bit of Orwell all mixed up. #Reading2024 πŸ‡³πŸ‡ΏπŸ“š

I saw this book being recommended all over the place online, and it looks like a bit of me. Epic fantasy, with a bit of queerness and less common cultural influence? Sign me up!
But it was so frustrating...

Book Cover to "Love Triangle" by Matt Parker.

Book Cover to "Love Triangle" by Matt Parker.

Matt is good nerdy humor, just a constant hum of niche puns and lines, really enjoyable. He's really good at breaking down when maths and equations mean what they mean, and I missed it when he didn't have an explanation for a topic.(Damn you Heron's Law!!). #Reading2024 πŸ‡³πŸ‡ΏπŸ“š

I started reading this free online comic on a whim, and was horrified by the recount of time in a "troubled teens" camp. Its a lot longer than I anticipated though. When you get to page 60 or so, you can probably stop, but it ends at page 100 if you're keen to finish it.

I read "Why don't we just kill the kid in the Omelas hole" a little while ago and thought "Wow, what a way to relook at Omelas!" But in the time since then I've kept thinking back and wondering what it really changes or builds on from the original story.

The cover of The Just City by Jo Walton

The cover of The Just City by Jo Walton

Has the same "detached exploration of an idea" vibe as I get from Neal Stephenson, but also felt as though it was structured to be a dialogue, or collection of dialogues, which was very appropriate to the material. #Reading2024 πŸ‡³πŸ‡ΏπŸ“š 1/2
