Система приема беженцев в стране давно находится в кризисе — существующие центры размещения не справляются с потоком людей. Хотя в Нидерландах самый высокий процент одобрения прошений об убежище, рассмотрение этих заявок занимает самые большие в Европе сроки. В ожидании решения по своим запросам люди вынуждены проводить в лагерях беженцев годы — зачастую в невыносимых условиях. Некоторые беженцы не выдерживают: с 2019 по 2023 год в лагерях произошло 26 случаев самоубийств.
