The ceremonial poles made imposing figures in the fading daylight. The sleek iron painted crimson by the sunset, foreshadowing the events of the night ahead in an eerie way. Jean took a deep breath and fixed his gaze ok the spot between the poles. The sandstone of the plaza bore a large crimson, almost black, stain that told the history of all the men and women who had their fate decided in that very spot. At the mercy of dragons, even though they had made the first choice to be there themselves. To be where Jean would be in a few hours. When the plaza would be alight with flames licking into the air from torches and bonfires it would be his turn to be standing on that dark spot, waiting for his fate to be decided.

_Your thoughts were in the gutter again, Jean,_ Reiner’s voice rumbled through Jean’s mind with a tail of soothing vibrations following in its wake. Jean knew Reiner wasn’t judging him, but merely prompting him to speak, something Jean appreciated dearly, considering that Reiner could just pull the thoughts from his mind if he wanted. But Jean wasn’t sure how to voice his thoughts this time, simply because the idea seemed impossible. Reiner’s mind stroked gently against his when he hesitated. _Those are bold thoughts from a man who regretted a puny centaur for days, don’t you think?_ Maybe Reiner was judging him a little and Jean elbowed him, knowing the move made no impact on the big creature, but he still had a shred of pride to defend, thank you very much.
