CRISIS TRIPTYCH
#haiku #renku
Minor Malice
Tearful eyes behind
fingers twined in chain link fence –
“better life” detained.
Change Of Procedure
Now new immigrants
seeking asylum are stripped
of their family.
Borderline Brutality
Dying in cages,
dehumanized, degraded,
all hopes put on ICE.
Thank you Tish. Yours's very much inspired mine.
It's a Basho sort of thing to do that. The poet does one verse, then another person does a second verse, then another person does a third and so on until it is a whole thing.
People collaborating to create beauty is always a joy

I'm off to read all about. I had never heard about #rengay #renku so thank you so much. Everyday's a school day

Renga, and renku, are vital to read up, and explore, to understand better the dynamic of haiku, the oh-so-small two part poem and its 'link and shift' classic motif.

Skipping ahead a few verses in the #renku The Summer Moon, Bashō gives a couplet
蕗の芽とりに
行燈ゆりけす
芭蕉
Fuki no me tori ni
Ando yuri kesu.
[A lady] hunting for butterbur buds
Jerks her lantern and loses the light.
#haiku
Continuing The Summer Moon #renku, Basho takes Boncho's couplet about a farmer's poor lunch and comments on the locale as a whole in a #haiku:
此筋は
銀も見しらず
不自由さよ
芭蕉
Kono suji wa
Gin mo mishirazu
Fujiyusayo
This place so backward
That the folk have not yet seen
Minted silver.
灰うちたたく
うるめ一枚
凡 兆
Hai uchi tataku
Urume no ichimai
Continuing with the #renku The Summer Moon, Bonchō tightens the view of farmers in a rice paddy with a 7, 7 couplet depicting a farmer's humble lunch:
Ashes brushed from a dried sardine
Just taken from the fire.
#haiku
二番草
取りも果さず
穂に出て
Nibangusa
Tori mo hatasazu
Ho ni idete.
The second weeding
Not yet finished, but the rice
Puts forth its ears.
Picking back up the Summer Moon #renku, Kyōrai writes a #haiku that shifts the scene to the country -- farmers are saying it's hot as they weed the rice paddies.

The summer moon
The Summer Moon, jointly made by Bashō, Bonchō, and Kyōrai, is one of the most famous #renku. Each composes 12 verses. A strong #haiku by Bonchō to start.

The Summer Moon is another famous #renku that Bashō co-wrote. The other two poets are Kyōrai and Bonchō.
A three-person team is good, because no person is stuck composing only tercets or only couplets.
The key difference is that #renku are not, theoretically, adversarial.
But both take place in an arena where each side agrees in advance on the rules.
And the craft in both is sharpened by the contest.
A very beautiful & astute friend of mine once remarked that #renku & #rapbattles were similar.
I struggled with this because the lives of the battlers are so different.
But. Both happen in real time; both can draw on HUGE lexicons; both are contests for fame.
What a wonderful world we live in.
That’s the first four verses, by four different poets, of the #renku Hatsushigure, ‘First Winter Rain.” Each poet composed nine verses.
This is just enough to show the point of renku - creating an image, passing it on, the next person transforming it and letting previous images drop away.
#haiku
The fourth verse in the #renku First Winter Rain is by Shihō:
たぬきをおどす篠張の弓
Tanuki wo odosu
Shinohari no yumi
A bamboo bow
Threatens the tanuki
With Bonchō's woodsman, we see at the edge of a field a bamboo bow hung as a warning to tanuki, so-called racoon dogs, not to raid the field.
#haiku
Continuing First Winter Rain #renku , Bonchō takes Bashō’s rustling leaves & shifts focus to river below- a farmer or woodcutter starting the day. Kyōrai's kite has vanished.
股引の
朝からぬるゝ
川こえて
Momohiki no
Asa kara nururu
Kawa koete
Leggings soaked
From the morning crossing
Of the river
#haiku
Continuing the First Winter Rain #renku, Bashō takes in the kite image from Kyōrai and reasponds with the couplet
一ふき風の
木の葉しづまる
Hitofuki kaze no
Ki no ha shizumaru
A gust of wind stirs the leaves
Then they fall silent.
Bashō gives the rustle of leaves of the tree where the kite sits.
#haiku
Here is the opening verse, by Kyōrai, from a famous #renku, ‘First Winter Rain.’
鳶の羽も
刷ぬ
はつしぐれ
Tobi no ha mo
Kaitsukuroinu
Hatsu shigure
The kite its feathers
Preens
In the first winter rain.
#haiku
ほととぎす皆
鳴き仕歌いたり
芭蕉
Hototogisu mina
Nakishi utaitari
The nightingales have all
Finished singing for the day
Bashō follows Kyōrai’s verse with a couplet, extending/expanding the image and continuing the #renku.
#haiku
Yes, interesting point about detail. The #haiku is a peculiar genre/form as it derives from the #hokku starting verse called 'renga' (and #renku) which is definitely a "form" with strict rules.
