An Acorn A4 laptop. The greyscale 640x480 screen has a text window open on it. The text in the window reads "Hello from 1992!"
The same Acorn A4 with various covers removed to allow access to the cables and battery I needed to replace. The screen is showing an image for the first time in over 20 years. Two wires run from where the original CMOS battery was soldered on to a new one not yet rehomed inside the case. Behind the machine is a soldering iron and so rolls of solder and other tools. The tools are not mine, but belong to the Nottingham Hackspace where I was working on it
I spent most of my day today fixing a computer. That's not particularly unusual in itself, but this computer was an ARM laptop. From 1992.

An image of a black-coloured Compaq Armada M700 closed on a desk. Its logos are visible on the left third of the top cover.
Depicts a black-coloured Compaq Armada M700 laptop, open and booting up. The laptop is fairly thin and sleek, as far as 90s laptops go. It’s displaying the Compaq logo during the power-on self-test, as well as the asset text “This is now Richie’s laptop”. It is also displaying a “162 - system options not set” error as a result of a dead CMOS retention battery, as well as the total memory counted during the memory test, saying “262,144 kilobytes okay”, or 256 megabytes of RAM.
This photo depicts the Compaq Armada M700 open and running, displaying a Windows 98 desktop showing the System Properties window. It reads Windows 98 Second Edition, and is registered to “Richie” and “Floptropica”. It is manufactured and supported by Compaq Computer Corporation and belongs to the Armada Family. It lists the CPU as “GenuineIntel” x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3 (a 650 megahertz Pentium 3 CPU) with 256 megabytes of RAM. It also has an 8 megabyte ATI Rage Mobility GPU. The various icons on the desktop include Internet Explorer, Armada Quick Reference, Compaq DVD Player (though this machine is not capable of reading DVDs), Compaq Information Center, Zuma Deluxe, RingCentral Fax, Driver, Tetris Worlds, Type to Learn 3 Home, Rally Championship, Midtown Madness, SimCity 2000, SimCity 3000, Diablo, Stronghold, RetroZilla, and Monopoly.
This photo depicts the Compaq Armada M700 running a full-screen game of Zuma Deluxe, with half of the board full of colourful marbles.
