7 July 1582: St. Henry Walpole (future #Jesuit ) enters the #English College #Rheims #otd - he converted when splashed by Campion's blood at the latter’s execution in 1581. Walpole would be executed himself at #York on 7 April 1595.

5 June 1579: Bl. James Fenn arrives to study at the #English College, then at #Rheims #otd Martyred at Tyburn, 12 Feb 1584. Had been stripped of his #Oxford BA in 1559 for refusing the supremacy. Beatified 1929.

30 Apr 1592: Cardinal William Allen sends Gregory Martin, priest, #Bible translator & friend of St. Edmund Campion to #Paris to consult doctors about his lungs. Too late - he returned to #Rheims on 14 Sept & died there on 28 Oct (SJO)

11 Apr 1629: d. Gabriel Gifford #Benedictine, of Hampshire, Archbishop of #Rheims (eebo/BM) who was in life France's highest ranking noble as Duke of #Rheims since the duchy went with the prelacy

Learned a lot about champagne today...

The left a glass of rose, rose because of the addition of dark grape skins. The right a sweet wine made with the leftover grape juice in the champagne making process.
