This is a detail of a staircase that could double as an Escher etching. The Romanesque-Revival design has columns supporting half-arches, and numerous cutouts in the grey stonework: rosettes, crosses, dentils, & quoins. Lights here and there delineate the shapes.
This is part of a stairwell in the New York State Capitol, Albany, New York [USA], a building designed by Henry Hobson Richardson. There are so many detailed little #Openings in the stonework! I think the design is extraordinary.
