Statement Regarding Assault on Protesters in Greenwood, SC =============== I find it strange that the very people who want to defend their constitutional right to free speech and assembly were the very ones who used pre-meditated methods to target a population exercising this right. One of the interesting things about rights: If you are entitled to it, everyone is entitled to it as well. But whenever aggressors threaten the lives of innocent people exercising their rights, we enter dangerous and very un-American territory. To have an unknown substance thrown on you and to have fear of potential health impacts is something no one should have to experience - especially not for merely standing in grass and holding a sign. The No Kings protesters were targeted because they spoke out for humane laws and policies. They spoke out for inclusivity and protection of different cultures and beliefs. I am saddened because America should be better than this. People have allowed themselves to be an inundated with so much hate that they’re willing to jeopardize the lives of innocent people. My heart and support goes out to all those that were impacted by the actions displayed at Saturday’s protest and thank the Greenwood Police Department and first responders for their swift action and for bringing the perpetrator to justice.
