#Ringwoodite is a major planet-forming mineral, so rare at Earth’s surface, we noticed it in meteors first. It whispers its secret properties to us through seismic waves, replenishes oceans, and visited us once in a tiny diamond spaceship.

As well as #MinCup24 (Vote #Ringwoodite!), September is also #IgNobel Prize time for 🧪research that makes people laugh and then think.

I just voted #Ringwoodite to break the tie 😂
And also because I didn’t know about it, and it’s pretty cool that it was first discovered in a meteorite

Today's #MinCup24 duell is #Kyanite /#Disthen Vs. #Ringwoodite. I am for several reasons in #TeamKyanite. One is the famous phase diagram: kyanite, #sillimanite, #andalusite. It's so famous even my humans know it

Why study and synthesize #Ringwoodite? Experiments (below, a diamond anvil pressure device that's transparent to visible light; Schmandt et al, 2014) and natural samples from the Earth's mantle (see ksircombe's posts […]

Wow, really tough choice today! Both are very cool, very unique. Ultimately though I had to go with #Ringwoodite because it's so secret and mysterious.
- super deep down
- changes unless caught e.g. in diamond
- maybe holds a backup water supply???

Two x-ray images of an experiment, first in its initial state, and then at a pressure equivalent to the Earth's mantle transition zone. The compression of the Pt and Pd allows the pressure to be calibrated, and the thermocouple measures temperature. At Spring-8 in Japan.

We can make #Ringwoodite but measuring the pressure is hard. Yingwei Fei (CIW, Fei et al, 2004) pioneered combining the experiment with simple cubic crystals with well known volume changes with pressure. The volume of these cubic crystals is measured with […]

Wow, is this round of #MinCup24 ever Blue Beauty v Blue Beauty! I’m voting for #Ringwoodite over #Kyanite because it’s DEEP in the Earth, an indicator of a water-rich mantle & present in meteorites (Blue Alien from SPAAACCEEE!). #TeamBlue can’t go wrong!

I like both! Kyanite has a fun phase diagram with andalusite and sillimanite, which allows useful pressure and temperature reconstruction. But #Ringwoodite is involved in one of the key mineral transitions in the mantle transition zone, which warms my global seismologist soul. So vote ringwoodite!

#Ringwoodite is a second chance for #Spinel (which lost out to #Vivianite earlier). Ringwoodite has the chemistry of olivine (Mg2SiO4) but the crystal structure of spinel (MgAl2O4).

The more common form of kyanite on the left is in matrix, nearly haphazardly arranged. The columns are often well defined and bladed on one side.

The form on the left is a more perfect, less fibrous crystal that still maintains the columnar shape.

The blue is vivid and beautiful.

The deepest blue to violet shifts are available in this subterranean mineral that is 300 miles down. It is theorized that locked in this mineral, which can contain hydrocarbons, may be 3x the total water in all of the oceans on earth!

This is a microscopic view of the crystaline ringwoodite. Shaped a bit like Maine, the brilliant blue and violet possible is visible shifting in brightness from top to bottom (darkest).

ROTD #MINCUP24 matchup is #Kyanite vs #Ringwoodite.

Kyanite is formed by the metamorphism of alumium-rich rocks, and is a great addition to any collection.

Ringwoodite is a high pressure mineral in the mantle btw 525 & 660 km deep. See alt text for more info!

First discovered in chondrite meteorite.
High pressure/temp version of forsterite!
In transition zone between upper & lower mantels.
There may be more water in rwood than there is in all the oceans.
Surfaces as inclusions inl diamonds.

Today’s #MinCup24 slogan is clearly Vote Blue no matter who!! You can’t go wrong in today’s battle between 2 blue minerals, but I think #Ringwoodite wins my endorsement, for its long journey from the mantle (THE MANTLE!!!), plus the particularly gorgeous shade of blue.

A diagram showing the velocity of P-waves as they travel through different layers of the Earth’s interior. It features a vertical cross-section of the Earth with depth below the surface (in kilometers) on the vertical axis and P-wave velocity (in kilometers per second) on the horizontal axis.
The layers labeled include:
•	Crust
•	Upper Mantle
•	Transition Zone
•	Lower Mantle

Notable features include a low-velocity zone (LVZ) and sharp increases in wave velocity at certain depths, corresponding to boundaries between layers. This diagram helps in understanding seismic activity and the Earth’s internal structure.

2/ #Ringwoodite is named for Ted Ringwood, a prominent Australian geochemist, who in the early 1960’s synthesised a dense spinel form from olivine and predicted a similar phase change deep in mantle to explain a structural transition seen in seismic waves passing through the Earth.

1/ Going for #Ringwoodite in today’s #MinCup24. It’s an interesting mineral – synthesised before discovery in nature, potentially responsible for harbouring most of the Earth’s water, and associated with safe storage of radioactive waste.

Round 1 Match 12 — Mineral Cup Kyanite vs Ringwoodite

#MinCup24 R1M12: #Kyanite versus #Ringwoodite

It’s time to dig deep in the mantle for blue minerals: Kyanite and Ringwoodite.

Kyanite is beloved for its beauty, unique characteristics, and distinct formation
story. Ringwoodite is a blue mineral formed at high pressure and temperature.
