Snow would be the easy
way out—that softening
sky like a sigh of relief
at finally being allowed
to yield. No dice.
We stack twigs for burning
in glistening patches
but the rain won’t give.

So we wait, breeding
mood, making music
of decline. We sit down
in the smell of the past
and rise in a light
that is already leaving.
We ache in secret,
memorizing

a gloomy line
or two of German.
When spring comes
we promise to act
the fool. Pour,
rain! Sail, wind,
with your cargo of zithers!

Climb
into a jar
and live
for a while.

Chill earth.
No stars
in this stone
sky.

You have ceased
to ache.

Your spine is
a flower.

The world is calling—soft, persistent. Can you hear it?
To be here is no small thing.
To stay, to listen, to receive what’s tender—maybe that’s the beginning.

#RitaDove "Demeter"s Prayer to Hades"

This alone is what I wish for you: knowledge.
To understand each desire and its edge,
to know we are responsible for the lives
we change. No faith comes without cost,
no one believes without dying.

Eurydice, Turning Each evening I call home and my brother answers. Each evening my rote patter, his unfailing cheer— until he swivels; leans in, louder: “It’s your daughter, Mom! Want to say hello to Rita?” My surprise...

Another beautiful, real life so relatable poem from Rita Dove's "Playlist for the Apocalypse." I found this reading of "Euridice, Turning." onbeing.org/poetry/euryd... #poetry #blackpoets #blackhistorymonth #RitaDove

A favorite line from Rita Dove's poem "Huddle": "A crook is just a bend in the road not yet traveled-- / he's simply waiting for the smoke to clear."
