Jutting out of the high volcanic plateau below Mount Teide, the 27-metre Roque Cinchado seems to defy gravity. It gets its weird shape from differential erosion whereby the softer darker rock at the base is being eroded by the weatherfaster than the harder rock at the top.

The impossible tree. Perched on a tiny ledge on the side of a precipitous pinnacle, a solitary pine catches the morning light.
