🎬 Film Term of the Week - Room Tone
Room tone is the natural ambient sound of a space, recorded with no dialogue or action.
It is what makes silence feel real.
It is rarely noticed when done well - but instantly felt when it is missing.
Small detail. Essential craft.

One of the more bittersweet Criterion Room Tones I've seen in a while.

To no one's surprise, @criterion.bsky.social has released the best Doomsday trailer so far. #roomtone
“Rustling, Low Chittering” a collage from Room Tone, an exhibition of closed-caption collages by Shanna Compton. Shot at a low angle to emphasize the torn edge of a yellow paper piece, the collage feature a grayscale woman amid pink waves next to a small aqua cloud that seems to be speaking in her ear.
Four archival pigment prints of the collages fanned out for numbering and signing. Each is numbered 1/1 in the lower left, indicating the edition is limited to a single print.
Close up of a collage from Room Tone (exhibition) & Deep Whoosh (book) by Shanna Compton showing a vintage family with pink teardrops covering their faces, except the little girl in a white dress, whose face is covered with a yellow flame instead.
Close up of a collage from Room Tone (exhibition) & Deep Whoosh (book) by Shanna Compton showing large orange flowers, a torn sliver of a woman’s face, and some lonely looking elevated highway or bridge.
Finishing up framing for #RoomTone.
Each of the archival prints on cotton paper is a limited edition of 1. They are twice the size of the 5 x 7 originals, and made to last, custom framed in maple, with archival materials. (The 1/1 numbering and signatures are under the mats when framed.)
