Baikonur’s Area 31 Launch Pad Restored for Manned and Cargo Soyuz Flights Russia has restored the only launch pad at Baikonur capable of sending manned Soyuz spacecraft and Progress cargo ships to the International Space Station (ISS). On November 27, 2025, Soyuz MS-28 launched successfully, but the service platform under the rocket fell into the ramp pit, destroying the 17-ton, 19-meter-long platform designated 8U216. This platform is essential for launch preparations and maintenance, as it moves on rails and locks in place with chains during liftoff. Roscosmos initially postponed the Progress MS-33 launch, with expectations of completing repairs by spring 2026. Work began in December, with over 150 engineers from Roscosmos and TsENKI working in two shifts to dismantle and repair the service platform. The outage of this pad impacted not only Russia but all ISS partners, including the United States, Japan, Canada, and ESA, since Soyuz and Progress spacecraft perform critical crew transport and orbital maintenance tasks. While other Soyuz pads exist at Plesetsk and Vostochny, only Baikonur supports launches to the ISS, making this restoration crucial. The next Progress MS-33 launch is scheduled for March 22, followed by Soyuz MS-29 with crew members Dubrov, Kíkina, and Menon on July 14. The repair used components from a 1977 backup platform, supplemented with newly manufactured parts, allowing the pad to return to full operational status.
