An October evening punt on the Rouge River.

Sky River& Trees… #RougeRiver #Oregon
The river is not navigable much further. But you'll get to Kingston Road, just north of the 401. And immediately beyond is the forks. Too shallow and proceed further.
Thank you for joining me again on another #RavineRamble

Beyond this stretch the river bends again and depends as you approach the bridge for the highway 401.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
Beyond the sharp bend, the river feels unnaturally straight as it parallels highway 401 for about 5-600meters.
And it's shallow, literal inches in places. I was dragging my rudder thru the sand at times.

And as always, signs of human manipulation are always at hand.. A small baffled chute leads a watercourse into the Rouge River.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
Inching closer to the highway, the river makes a sharp 90 degree turn east, and at the bend there looks to be a rather fresh land slide area.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
Pushing further north, an abandoned water access point from a private property on the Toronto side of the river.

In this section we come upon a ghost in the Valley.
I've found little on this ruin. Apparently called Cowan House, it at some point served as a hotel/inn for sailors who docked in Pickering. Or so I've read.

The River is rather wide and very shallow in these parts.. In places it's about a foot deep. It would take little effort to ford the river in these parts.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
Moving up the river, a few houses on the Pickering side have water access to the river.. In the National Park. What a get!
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
But back to the river itself.. It bends and turns, it's wide and it's slow..
The Rouge is by far the least altered river in Toronto. It's been allowed to run wild more than any other.

And out of pure personal undulance. That tree has been my sunset muse for many years.

But back to the lone tree in the marsh.. Sitting on the bend of the river, it's a bench mark of sorts. The gate keeper to the upper reaches of the Rouge River.

No paddle would be complete without meeting the locals..
In this case a pair of Trumpeter Swans. Unlike mute swans, there are a native species.

Moving past the bridges and the entrance to the marsh, the river if flanked by tall stands of reeds. With a lone tree standing in the marsh on the right.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
Moving up the river you're met by the rail bridge and the pedestrian bridge over the river just south of the marsh cells.

Starting at the mouth of the river, in lake Ontario. The river mouth has changed and narrowed since the last time I was here (3 weeks ago). But that's to be expected with flowing water and shifting sands.

Back in June I paddled the marsh, this time we're going to the end of the navigable river.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO #ravineramble
Time for a #RavineRamble.. And because its summer, Im going nautical once again.
Going to paddle the Rouge River from the mouth to the forks of Rouge River and Little Rouge Creek. This a part of Canada's 1st Urban National Park

And finally.. The marsh is in bloom and the Lilypad's are particularly beautiful.

There is always one... Too bad they don't know that their land laws don't apply to me.. I live by the law of the sea.

The eastern march in all it's glory.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO
Finally making my way into the eastern cell of the marsh, a much smaller body that also appears to be a part of the former river bed.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO
The main western section of the march, (I like to call it the lagoon) is a large and shallow pool. It's often not more than a foot deep in most places. But this year with the rains it's got an extra foot of water to it.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO
Back into the main lagoon we go.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO
This year this section is overgrown, Hard to get into, but in years past I could make it all the way to the tree in the distance.
This image from last May 2024, looking west down this straight channel.
#lovetheravines #RavineRambler #rougeriver #nauticalnonsense #paddleTO
On return trip to the main lagoon, there is a channel that juts out into the reeds. A straight line of water. Too straight to be natural, but I've never found any mention of if it was manmade.
