A photo of a restored Cumbrian charcoal burning platform in the woods. It probably dates from 17th to 19th century. Charcoal burners had a tough life, living out in the woods, sometimes with their families in makeshift shelters. There's a reconstructed shelter just up the road from here at Haybridge Nature reserve. Charcoal was used for the local iron industry - it was the main fuel for smelting iron ore. The Lake District had plenty of iron ore and woodland, and the iron industry here goes back at least to the medieval period, if not before.
This is an old charcoal burning platform which is on my daily walking route - restored by my friend. There are a few others scattered through this wood, many others in the local area, and also remnants of the burners' dwellings. Click Alt for more.
