This one stumped me, not because I couldn't think of something, but because the two ideas I did come up with before looking up what else rutted could mean weren't stories I was keen to tell.
He looked at the #rutted road ahead and wondered, how many generations had walked it before. It was built by the Romans, but there might already have been a Celtic path.
He didn't know he was about to find out when he stepped over the secret threshold, unawares.
