Naturally, the funeral crowd is more intimate than the wedding crowd, and presumably composed of almost the exact same people, but Big Tom Callahan does not lack for mourners, and they mourn him together, their Shared Sorrow as Real as the Happiness they Shared together just moments (of screentime) earlier. This is a GOOD fucking movie 😭
In an almost-Field-of-Dreams-esque transition, the crowd dwindles ghostily down to just a handful, and then to just Tommy and Richard, Tommy unable to leave his father's side, and Richard unable to leave Tommy's. I'm weeping right now, lol.
Tommy Boy has eyes only for Big Tom Callahan, naturally, but Richard looks to Tommy in his grief, and though he (Richard) is grieving, as well, he looks to his brother-to-be, Tommy Callahan. Gosh, it's so beautiful, y'all!
Tommy Boy leaves the frame, but Richard Hayden continues to look on, hands inertly stuck in his pockets, no way to reach out to Tommy and connect to him, though that is clearly, explicitly what he wishes he could do.
Like #TommyBoy, for this moment, all jokes aside:
