“The Adoration of Saint Egwin” - A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a frog with a halo and a small cicada sitting at the top of a tan mountain rock, looking up at a gold star. The sky is deep blue, with white stars scattered across it. Top right is a big gold star. The frog is green, with darker green stripes along their body. They are in profile, facing right, looking up with wide eyes. The halo around the frog is a Victorian-style fancy halo with a gold round ring with points around the outside tipped with white pearls, and a gold line coming out of the pearls. The outline of the ring is edged with gold dots, and the center around the frog’s head outlined with gold lines like rays. To the right of the frog, is a flying cicada, with their front legs raised in adoration. The cicada’s wings are metallic green, outlined in gold, and their eyes are red. St. Egwin was a 7th century Aristocratic English bishop who was reprimanded for being too harsh on his priests, so he went on a penitential pilgrimage to Rome, and being REALLY penitent, the legend says he did the whole thing in leg shackles, the key to which he threw in the river Avon. When he got to Rome, he supposedly found the key in the belly of a fish he bought in the market in Rome. This is a completely ridiculous story, but the Catholic Church had to do something to make the early saints who weren’t martyred stand out. He founded the Benedictine Monastery of Evesham in England.

Anyone who is/was Catholic knows every day of the year is dedicated to several saints. The silliest saint today is the 7thC English saint Egwin of Worcester (“woo-stah”).
