Two monks in brown hassocks cross a green yard in front of the dome-capped, hulking form the Spanish mission church. This side elevation has a corner bell tower, the dome, and eight bays of open-air openings -- surely once filled with glass. In the immediate foreground on the far right is a rough lumber column and trellis that fronts a series of apartments that define the perimeter of the field.

Mission San Jose is the largest and most beautiful of the Spanish Missions along the San Antonio River south of that Texas city. It was completed in 1755 with restoration by the WPA in the 1930s.
