A mix of white sand and stones, and sparse long grasses in the foreground. Large dunes stretch to the horizon with calm, blue water either side. The sky is blue with occasional light cloud. There aren't many other places in Orkney like Tresness & Cata Sand. The beach itself is part of a thin peninsula, splitting a sheltered tidal bay, and the North Sea. Backed by huge dunes, the white sand carries on northwards up the coast of the Bay of Newark. Cata Sand is the name given to the tidal lagoon behind the dunes. This flat, sandy plain quickly fills with water when the tide comes in.
