from 02/06/23 pickman (a black goat woman with four horns and a long beard) smiles awkwardly at the viewer. drawn originally as a study of scaring and horn damage; her left bottom horn has been torn through and the left side of her face has patchy fur and dark scars as if she’d survived an explosion from that direction. various other scars (some fresher than others) slice through her nose and cheeks - but she is currently uninjured and relatively charming.

made 12/11/2021, while Marrow in the Bone was airing. Chine looms aggressive and menacing over a younger fully-human version of themself, who in turn is sheltering the baby It - who peers up at chine, unsure.

it is scared of the violence that’s happening around it, and it is looking for gui- it is looking- it will be at home where someone who takes care of it says “I will be your home”. And I think if you are not doing it, other Chine instinctively will.

“off boat, be back soon"
he finds it later, after giving chine a chance to sleep off last night's pilot house vigil. there's no way to know when they left, but duvall watches the empty shoreline pass out the window and knows it doesn't matter. they won't be back.

painted on 12/04/21, between the airing of Marrow in the Field and Marrow in the Bone (prior to a full description of the Thing in the Woods). reworked to correct chine’s poleax in november 2022. chine stands with his back to the viewer, poncho and hair blowing in the wind and poleax drawn at the ready. a younger only-human version of chine stands in an old shed with a hoe over his shoulder in the midground. he looks out at chine with a complicated mix of disappointment and sorrow on his face. behind the shed a giant shrew crashes through the trees, its mouth open and bloody. the trees around it grow thin and tall and slanting up towards the sky, their leaves transforming into clouds in a turbulent sky.

originally shared 11/29/21, while Passage on the Jade Moon part 3 was airing chine grins in the foreground as duvall gives him a kiss on the cheek. they are both covered in a variety of insects, notably an ambiguous green moth on chine’s ear that would eventually become my shorthand for the adoring swarm in general (not necessarily duvall’s bugs), and a pair of beetles on duvall’s collar that i arbitrarily decided represented chine and duvall (duvall an eyed click beetle and chine a large black rove beetle) and frequently included in future artwork.
