Near the market, Sanga spotted a girl, no older than five or six, in black leather armor, not too dissimilar in style to the armor she and Neri were wearing, with a violet satin sash tied around her waist and a black cape hanging from her shoulders. She held a basket in one hand and a little wooden dagger in the other. She stood alone, watching timidly as the other children played. "Look, there's a little Crow," Sanga pointed her out to Neri. He simply grunted his response. Clicking her tongue in disapproval, Sanga headed for the girl, dragging Neri along. As they approached, the girl took in the sight of them, and her eyes widened. "I like your costume," Sanga said with a smile. "Antivan Crow?" "D-don't you t-try to steal my sweets," the girl stammered. She raised the toy dagger while tucking her basket of sweets behind her back. "I'll aassassinate you." "I believe you would," Sanga laughed. "But that is no way to hold a dagger. Here."

After bidding Nando, Euphy, and Paolo a good night, Sanga and Neri left the lounge. Vidal stood, happily swishing his tail as they stepped outside. Sanga gave his neck a pat and motioned for him to follow. The fog was thicker. Sanga was barely able to see beyond a meter in front of her. Neri kept a firm grip on her elbow as they walked quietly, their steps highlighted by the clink of his cane's silverite tip on the cobblestone. She looked up at Neri, admiring the sharp jawline, his impeccable posture, the faint lines at the corner of his eye. She felt a warmth begin to spark between her legs and the hunger for him grow. He glanced at her and winked, smiling. "What is on your mind?" He asked. "Thinking about how much I want to ride you when we get home," she replied. He chuckled. Though he said nothing else in response, his pace quickened, eager to get home and give her want she wanted.

"I will see justice done," Neri said calmly, "Even if it takes the rest of my life. But for now, I will heed your words. For her sake." Neri pressed another kiss to the baby's forehead and reluctantly handed her back. Fingertips traced along the edge of her tiny, pointed ear as he sighed. She wriggled within her blanket, one tiny hand still grasping the plush phoenix, the other reaching out for him. He gently caressed the baby's head before turning to walk away. Behind him, he could hear the infant whine as he exited the room, and it took everything in him to not turn back and take her, to keep going. Perhaps he was a fool to do so, but he was certain—felt it in his heart—that one day, that girl would walk back into his life looking for answers, and when that day came, he would be ready to give them to her.
Finished ch 26 last night & I quite enjoy it 🥰
