Nun steht der exzentrische Ermittler wieder vor seinem Wegbegleiter, putzmunter, arrogant und wie immer zu Scherzen aufgelegt. Die Freude des Doktors ist allerdings nicht ganz ungetrübt, denn ihm wurde übel mitgespielt. Holmes bleibt aber nicht viel Zeit, um seinen verstimmten Assistenten zu besänftigen, es gilt, im Auftrag seines Bruders Mycroft einen Sprengstoffanschlag auf das britische Parlament zu vereiteln. In 'Sherlock - Der leere Sarg' kehrt der berühmte Detektiv von den Toten zurück. John Watson (Martin Freeman) weiß nicht, ob er aus Freude in die Luft springen oder vor Wut platzen soll: Zwei Jahre nach dem vermeintlichen Tod seines Freundes will der Doktor seiner Geliebten Mary (Amanda Abbington) einen Heiratsantrag machen, als der Kellner des Nobelrestaurants sich plötzlich als Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) zu erkennen gibt. Der Meisterdetektiv ist quicklebendig - um seinen Gegenspieler Moriarty (Andrew Scott) auszutricksen, musste er sein eigenes Ableben vortäuschen. Nun ist er zurückgekehrt, um einen drohenden Terroranschlag in London zu vereiteln. Auf die Mithilfe seines treuen Assistenten muss Sherlock einstweilen verzichten: Watson ist beleidigt, weil er in den tollkühnen Plan nicht eingeweiht wurde - und weil der Detektiv sich über seinen Schnurrbart lustig macht. Der Doktor wird jedoch entführt und so gegen seinen Willen in den Fall involviert. In letzter Sekunde kann Sherlock den Freund aus einem brennenden Scheiterhaufen befreien. Aber wer kidnappte Watson und aus welchem Grund? Auf diese Frage weiß der beste Detektiv aller Zeiten keine Antwort. Unterdessen kommt Sherlock auf die Spur einer Untergrundbewegung - im wortwörtlichen Sinn: In einem stillgelegten U-Bahn-Tunnel soll eine gigantische Sprengladung gezündet werden, direkt unter Westminster Abbey. Dank seiner genialen Kombinationsgabe können Sherlock und Watson die tickende Zeitbombe kurz vor der Zündung finden. Nach einem Exkurs in seine Gedankenwelt erklärt Sherlock seinem verdutzen Begleiter jedoch, dass er nicht wisse, wie man das Ding entschärft.
