Riverwoods: dispersal corridors or refuges? Winter is often the time when I stay close to home and explore the burn that runs behind my garden. Ten or so years ago a fish ladder was installed just a few hundred yards downstream to allow salm…

#Riverwoods or #riparian woodland, should be see it as #dispersal corridors, #refugia or does it unique #habitat in its own right? Some reflections from the perspective of #lichens and #bryophytes.

#Mosses along farmland tracks near Aberdeen. Barbula convoluta, Bryum argenteum, Syntrichia ruralis and Didymodon fallax. Their colours and shapes are amazing.

Metzgeria fruticulosa on a beech nearby. Note the gemmae at the leaf tips. This #liverwort seems to spread into NE Scotland as I am finding it more and more. #scottishlichens #scottishbryophytes #biodiversity #epiphytes #noticing

The #liverwort Metzgeria furcata on a tree near Banchory. Abundant male reproductive feature (the globose features on the lobes) that I never noticed before. Have the environmental conditions changed and are new genetic makeups required? #scottishlichens #scottishbryophytes #biodiversity #epiphytes

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this talk - complex topic for a newbie like me but Petra has excellent clarity of communication. #ScottishWildlifeTrust #scottishlichens #archaeology #geology #scottishbryophytes #historicscotland #lichenGB

This is the recording of the talk on the importance of archaeological and historical monuments for #lichens and #bryophytes I did for the #ScottishWildlifeTrust. Always happy to collaborate on this theme.

The yellow species is rather narrow lobed for Xanthoria parietina, so I am keeping an open mind. It does, however, grow with Physcia tenella (the pale species growing on top of it) which it often parasitises when spores are in search for the right green algae species to enter the symbiosis with.

Nyholmiella gymnostoma is very characteristic as it is diminutive, has inrolled leaf margins and has gemmae on those leaves (the brown flecks in this photo).

Nyholmiella to the right looks very small and low in comparison to Lewinskya affinis that grows to the left of it.

Both the Xanthoria and Physcia species and the Ramalina species indicate that the bark of aspen is nutrient-rich. You can just about make out the oval soralia on the edges of the flattened lobes that is characteristic for Ramalina farinacea.

In several parts of Muir of Dinnet NNR there are areas with aspen and each of these has less common lichen and bryophyte species on them. Last year Oliver Moore found the very rare Nyholmiella gymnostoma on one of these aspen. #scottishlichens #scottishbryophytes #mosses #lichens #biodiversity

The slightly overhanging rock faces along the Vat Burn at Muir of Dinnet NNR are host to some characteristic lichen and moss species that I have not (or hardly ever) found further down Deeside. #scottishlichens #lichens #biodiveristy #scottishbryophytes #nature #geology

When you visit Muir of Dinnet NNR to prepare a guided walk and the mosses you're meant to talk about look like this ... An absolutely stunning landscape, bitterly cold, but the weather may need to change before that guided walk. #scottishlichens #scottishbryophytes #biodiversity #bryophytes #mosses

A quick visit to Garlogie Stonecircle yesterday to get ready for tonight's talk for the Scottish Wildlife Trust. The ringcairns in the centre are an introcate interplay between low boulders, gravel and soil and attract a wide range of mosses and liverworts. #scottishlichens #scottishbryophytes
