Katarina Ivanović is considered the first Serbian female painter of the modern era. She painted portraits, still lifes, historical and genre compositions in the spirit of academic classicism. She began painting an early age, but it was this "Self-portrait" from 1836 that earned her first real public praise after the painting as exhibited at the Vienna Academy of Arts in 1837.

Ivanović presents herself with light skin and dark brown hair styled in ringlets that frame her face. Her expression is serious, almost pensive, and her gaze is directed slightly to the left at us. Against a dark, muted background, she is dressed in an elegant off-white gown with a low neckline, revealing her shoulders and upper chest. The dress features subtle floral patterns. A pale pink shawl is draped over her shoulders and arm, adding a touch of color to the overall palette. Her sleeves are long and slightly puffed at the wrists.

While in Vienna, Ivanović became close with poet Sima Milutinović of Sarajevo who sang her praises in the 1837 poem Trojesestarstvo:
-------
"A Serbian girl is skilled in wielding a brush!'.
Has that ever happened anywhere else?...!

With her gentle, delicate beauty she adorns
In the form of all the faces of the storyteller,

The approval of the expert flatters;
Her mother is joyful to her!

She still tries, still seriously studies
To reach the top with experience

And when Serbdom is already struggling so much about it, and with that, God grant! crown it."
--------
In 1840 she kindly thanked Milutinović with a portrait of him which is also in the National Museum of Serbia.
