In today’s case, a probable #derecho occurred, spanning ~470 miles from eastern #Indiana to eastern #Pennsylvania. This line of #SevereThunderstorms produced strong #winds & damage along it’s path.

4/26: A Day 3 #ModerateRisk of #SevereThunderstorms means there is time to prepare for the potential of a #tornado outbreak. #SevereWx season has certainly ramped back up as we enter what is traditionally a peak for the southern plains.

By Mark Torregrossa | mtorregr@mlive.com The Storm Prediction Center started an extended severe weather forecast. They rarely indicate any areas of severe weather four to five days out. They are already highlighting parts of Michigan in their day four and day five severe weather forecast. A storm system and trailing cold front is scheduled to move through Michigan Tuesday afternoon and evening. All of the model data has been showing a consistent timing on the frontal passage for the past several days. Remember- severe thunderstorms usually need the heat of the late afternoon and evening to bring weather woes to Michigan. The timing and location of the cold front will be crucial as to if and where we get severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening. Here is the Storm Prediction Center’s day four and day five severe weather forecasts for next Monday morning through Wednesday morning. A large severe weather outbreak is expected over Iowa, southwest Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota Monday afternoon. Some of those severe storms may be heading into far western Lower and the Upper Peninsula Monday night. Remember though that Michigan usually escapes major severe storms during the night in spring. The air cools down enough to lower the fuel for severe storms. severe weather next week Severe weather forecast for 8 a.m. Monday, April 28 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 29.NOAA Tuesday afternoon and evening is really the time period in question. You can see the Storm Prediction Center indicates the storms could become severe over southern and southeast Lower Michigan Tuesday. The line of storms would be in that region of Michigan sometime in the late afternoon or evening. severe weather next week Severe weather forecast for 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 29 to 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 30.NOAA Here’s the model that forecasts most accurately in that time frame. It seems to indicate there is a chance the storms develop over southeast Michigan and reach their strongest levels in northern Ohio and northern Indiana. severe Radar forecast from 2 a.m. Tuesday, April 29 to 2 a.m. Wednesday, April 30.NOAA This kind of situation usually leads to straight-line wind gusts over Michigan rather than a focus on tornadoes. Early in the storm season we also have a higher chance for large hail. We won’t worry about anything significant right now. This is just an early heads-up in case you have a project going that is susceptible to quick bursts of thunderstorm wind gusts. It is a weekend when you could get into a spring building project in the back yard.
