#Sharks2018 #SharkRayMPA @crigby4 : In the Maldives, a Shark Sanctuary hasnβt effectively accomplished its goals because all the stakeholders are confused about whatβs supposed to happen, how, and why.
#Sharks2018 #SharkRayMPA @crigby4 : Coral reef resident species of sharks benefit from reef MPAs, as do migratory species that spend lots of time in those protected areas- a species need not spend all its time in an MPA to benefit from MPA protection.
(RIP my menshies)
#Sharks2018 #SharkRayMPA @crigby4 : There is still shark mortality in Shark Sanctuaries- bycatch from fisheries that arenβt illegal. Some Sanctuaries are implementing gear restrictions to reduce shark bycatch.
#Sharks2018 #SharkRayMPA @crigby4 : Many MPAs donβt have clearly defined goals or conservation targets, making it difficult to determine if theyβre succeeding.
#Sharks2018 #SharkRayMPA @crigby4 : Shark-focused MPAs and Shark Sanctuaries cover about 6% of the ocean. Considered simple and less resource intensive to enforce, but there are concerns about βpaper parksβ that prevent more effective measures. Not much scientific study yet!
The last π’ #sharks2018 talk is @crigby4 , βhow effective are shark and ray MPAs?β #SharkRayMPA
πΆI got a sticker, I got a sticker, I got a sticker, hey, hey, hey, hey!πΆ
#Sharks2018 thanks @squatinaivalina @MarAlliance
#Sharks2018 @squatinaivalina : Talking about deep sea sharks in the mesoamerican region (Mexico Belize Honduras Guatemala). Ca get to 200 m deep pretty close to shore, and thereβs little management re: deep sea fishing.
#Sharks2018 van der Water: Showed us a slick PR video of captive breeding (and release) of endangered sharks shares and rays in the North Sea! 70 thornback rays last year, on track for 800 next year!
Holy cow we did it! Thanks to friends near and far for donating banquet tickets so that the #Sharks2018 local student volunteers can celebrate with us tonight! @natashahinojos did a good thing today.
#Sharks2018 Mendes: Elasmobranchs are well represented in trading card games π
#Sharks2018 Mendes: used trading card games (PokΓ©mon, Magic) to educate the public about local sharks and their conservation. What real traits are there in fictional monsters?
Thanks to everyone who attended my #Sharks2018 talk! Iβll be submitting it for publication in August, so let me know if you have any suggestions on how to make it better!
#Sharks2018 The effort and goals of scientists and members of the environmental community are not aligned towards the same shark conservation policy goals, creating an effort/goal mismatch and even occasional conflict between these groups
#Sharks2018 Shark conservation NGO employees usually value the role of science and get scientific information from reliable sources, but sustainable fisheries solutions are less well-known than bad news about shark population declines. #OceanOptimism
#Sharks2018 Traditional fisheries management tools and no-take MPAs got significantly higher support (and significantly less opposition) than Shark Sanctuaries and fin trade bans among surveyed shark conservation NGO employees. (This one surprised me, FWIW)
