A Pentameroceras mirum fossill with view of the aperture, held by a hand and with a scale bar. The cross section is circular, about 1 cm, and has one long horizontal slit, which is connected to four more slits about 1/4 to the left. Left side is dorsal, right side ventral.

A Pentameroceras mirum fossill with view of the right lateral side, held by a hand and with a scale bar. The specimen is about 2 cm long, with the apex on the left missing, and the aperture contracted, so that the fossil is more or less drop shaped (except for the missing tip/apex)

Here one of my favorite fossil #cephalopods for #FossilFriday:

Pentameroceras mirum from the #Silurian of #Gotland! Those narrow slits of the shell were likely where arms or eyes would stick out!

This ancient scorpion is kinda unique regarding its age, exhibiting a surprisingly modern leg’s anatomy than other silurian scorpions. It hints to a more complicated history of scorpions’ transition from water to land that could have begun way earlier than we thought.

Size : maybe 10-ish cm of body length in general
Time period : Late Silurian
Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details

The animal drawn is a brown scorpion with little yellow lines on its sides

Our first scorpion in Cheliceratime, and one of the oldest while still being weirdly modern for its age!

This medium size eurypterid, according to its legs’ morphology, may have been a scavenger looking for food on the seafloor. First described in 1912, 54 years passed after before it gained its own current name.

Size : around 25cm of body length
Time period : Late Silurian
Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details

The animal drawn looks a bit like a scorpion but without claws, short spiny legs at the front, smooth long posterior legs, and a long sword-like telson in place on the sting

Painterly underwater illustration showing a column of light illuminating multiple sea creatures in an otherwise dark open ocean. There are smaller placoderms being preyed on by lobe-finned fish and a eurypterid.

Hidden Secret in the Field Museum’s Silurian Diorama The Field Museum has a very nice Silurian marine diorama, which includes crinoids, cephalopods, corals, trilobites, and more from the Silurian period. It's meant to represent what the Chicago area looked like during the Silurian Period. Much of the insight comes from the the fossils found in Thornton Quarry. There is a little secret with the exhibit. One of the museum's staff hid a tiny cow in it.

WPR: A portal into underwater, prehistoric Wisconsin found in the heart of Waukesha County An illustration of how the Waukesha Biota may have looked 400 million years ago. Illustration courtesy of Christian McCall Wisconsin Public Day has an article about fossils from Waukesha County, including a the oldest known leech in the fossil record. The fossil deposit is commonly referred to as the Waukesha Lagerstätte. A few years ago, researchers found the world's oldest fossilized scorpion at the site.

Ancient Leech Fossil Shows Early Leeches Were Ocean Hunters

Scientists uncovered a 430-million-year-old leech fossil, Macromyzon siluricus, in Wisconsin's Silurian deposits, showing early leeches were marine hunters rather than blood-suckers. getnews.me/ancient-leech-fossil-sho... #leechfossil #silurian #wisconsin
