Generally, #volcanoes that erupt quite frequently (like #Sinabung in recent years) are unlikely to produce very large SO2 amounts in a single event. It's the ones that erupt after laying dormant for centuries you have to watch.

Impressive #eruption plume from #Sinabung today, to tropopause level or higher. But satellites are only detecting modest amounts of SO2: ~11 kilotons in this @NASA AIRS retrieval. Much too low for any climate impact. @ClimateOfGavin @PabloSurGames @airesEO

Yet another awesome @planetlabs 🛰️ image showing the aftermath of the Feb 19 #Sinabung #eruption. The main axis of ashfall is clear, plus amazing detail in deposits on the PDC apron. Immense value for understanding PDC hazards.

Clear increase in SO2 emissions from #Sinabung detected by @NASA OMI and @NASANPP OMPS 🛰️ in ~2 weeks prior to its Feb 19 #eruption. At dome-forming volcanoes, ⬆️ SO2 can indicate rising pulse of fresh magma. so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/pix/daily/0218/sumatra_0...
