Today, a walk to Plymouth Hoe, to watch local national hero and psychopath Sir Francis Drake having a game of skittles whilst waiting for the Spaniards to turn up.

That's my "I was here" footprint on #DrakesBeach, #PointReyes Peninsula, CA. No apostrophe in Drakes because it's the name of a place.

The Bay is named after her Majesty's explorer/privateer (pirate with papers) #SirFrancisDrake, whose ship #GoldenHind (formerly Pelican) arrived here in 1579.

We're facing a colonial-style town building, opposite its imposing door and close enough to need to look slightly upwards to view the upper floor and edge of the tiled roof under the clear blue sky. The road we're in is narrow and the sun of this bright day is behind buildings leaving what we're looking at in shade, but it's still bright, painted a vibrant yellow and decorated on the top floor with plants and potted palm trees. The pair of doors are huge with a thick stone surround and seemingly made of planks of rusted iron. Each door has a square window near its top and each has a door knocker fashioned in the form of a lion. A lamp is mounted on the yellow wall either side of the door. The smaller upper floor has a small, black-painted balcony running along the width of the building, deep enough for small tables with two chairs to be sat out in front of the evenly-spaced windows above. The potted palm trees make this look like a lovely place to sit out and watch the people below.
