Facebook post from meteorologist Noah Bergren:

WEEKEND: I want to make crystal clear it is very likely there will be:
1) A major, in spots rare snowstorm for these areas
2) A big ice storm, locally rising to the point of crippling
3) Razor sharp gradients in the precip. TYPE

I want to scream from the rooftops that there is GOING TO BE remarkably extreme cutoffs in impact over very small areas north-south. Trust me. Meaning, XY town gets 12" of snow, and 45 minutes south it's 1" of snow and 4" of sleet, and 30-45 mins. south of that, it's a crippling 1"+ freezing rain ice storm. The thing that is uncertain now is not IF that is all going to happen -- it's going to 100%. It's just where are those 'corridors' going to set up shop. Trends now are pushing the sleet and ice line further north, as well as the all snow zone. Time will tell.

There will be zones of all three Friday night through Sunday. What is going to be hard is where the corridors of each setup.

The last two runs of the EURO computer model indicate this trickiness.

Tuesday afternoon, the EURO had the ice line on Saturday barely into southern TN.
Tuesday night, the EURO model shifted the entire system north by a hundred or so miles.

Showing you this to hammer home the point that it is not set in stone WHO and WHERE will see what yet. But what I will say clearly, is that where it stays all snow, I see 12"+ of snow happening pretty easily. Where it is all ice, or mostly ice even, 1"+ of freezing rain should happen. XY town in Z county/state for what is not able to be determined yet.

[... truncated for character limit ...]

I also want to remind everyone on these maps you will see from meteorologists and forecasters, PINK indicates a wintry mix, but WHICH if its sleet or freeing rain makes a MONSTER difference.
Several inches of sleet is nasty and a pain, but it is FAR better than all freezing rain.

The 00z GFS is finally coming in line with the Euro.

This storm gives me memories of the Feb. 2021 winter storm. Living in Paducah, KY at the time woke up at 8AM day of the storm with temps in the 10s and heavy sleet falling. A total forecast surprise with much warmer air aloft than all models had.

This is going to be a very major winter storm for the entire southern and eastern U.S. outside of basically just Florida.

This storm could have a similar level surprise and uncertainty somewhere. This is just a simulated view now of the radar Sunday morning at sunrise.

Blue being snow, the salmon sleet, and pink freezing rain.

I want to stress a SLEET STORM while highly impactful, does not take out power and cripple things. Freezing rain does. And there looks to be many areas that stay sleet for a very long time, and some that will stay all freezing rain.

Freezing rain sticks to everything like a glazed donut. Sleet bounces off everything like sprinkles.

Determining the specific hyper local transition lines from snow, to sleet, to freezing rain is going to be a forecasting headache and likely not known with a high level of accuracy until the day before the event.
