It has a mostly black plumage, with a little white showing on the wings at rest, and a conspicuous white "spectacle" around its eye. It is found in South America, in countries such as Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. It prefers open habitats such as grasslands and scrublands. The Spectacled tyrant is a flycatcher, meaning it catches insects in mid-air. It is usually seen perching on a branch or fence post, waiting for prey to fly by. Two subspecies are recognised.
