New ‘scimitar-crested’ Spinosaurus species discovered in the central Sahara Phys.org has a story about a new species of spinosaurus. Spinosaurus mirabilis was found in Niger at a remote locale in the central Sahara by a team of 20 researchers led by Paul Sereno, Ph.D., Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. Skeletal reconstruction of Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis, one of three named spinosaurids from the Kem Kem of Morocco. Shown are an articulated series of cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae, omitting posterior dorsal and caudal vertebrae, of a slender-necked spinosaurine. No one single articulated series of a complete neck is described for any spinosaurine theropod dinosaur. The closest being a partial neck for Sigilmassasaurus. This differs from other spinosaurine necks by extremely short or absent neural spines in the rear.
