Ireland has two patron saints — one of whom we talk about much more than the other. Here's @TheConversationUS's story about St. Brigid, who shares her feast day, Feb. 1, with the start of spring.

A color full length illustration of St. Brigid of Ireland. She is wearing a brown garment with a blue cape and holding a staff.
St. Brigid was born in Faughart, Ireland in the year 451. Brigid’s mother Broicsech was a slave owned by Brigid’s father, Dubhthach, who was a pagan Chieftain of Leinster. Much of what is written about Brigid is based on folklore and tradition, including her many purported miracles. For example, as a young farm slave, Brigid gave away her household’s butter and bacon to the hungry, then prayed, and miraculously the foo d was replenished. When grown and freed, Brigid wished to live a godly life and to help the poor and the sick. Eventually, she established monasteries at Kildare, one for men and one for women. She became an abbess but also traveled, preached, and was said to have performed miracles such as curing blindness. According to tradition, she died at Kildare on February 1st, 525. And so, February 1st is her feast day. Traditionally on this day, St. Brigid's Crosses are woven from rushes, and are hung in homes for protection. In her honor, a perpetual fire is kept burning at Kildare. She is a patron saint of Ireland as well as of healers, poetry, smiths, and dairy folk.

The Church and wider society need the “particular insights and witness of #women”, the leader of the Irish #Church has said.

Engraving of St. Brigid in typical nun-attire, sitting with an open text in her lap. She has an inkpot in one hand and a quill in the other, and has been interrupted wheile writing by an angel, which is looking over her shoulder. A comic speech bubble has been added to the engraving, with the text "Is there anything to be said for having another bank holiday?!"
I mean, we do think Brigid was some woman, so maybe 2 bank holidays honouring her isn't such a bad idea?
This image is taken from 'The Life of St. Brigid' by Rev. John O'Hanlon.
Thanks to our colleagues in Special Collections & Archives for yet another gem!
