I watched this with my FiancΓ©e and she didn't understand why Tom opted for his holodeck program to be black and white since that was just a limitation of film from that era, so if you are experiencing Captain Protons life it would be in colour.
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
This episode gave the Doctor some fun stuff to do too, as the most qualified member of the crew to make first contact with a photonic race.
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
A fun holodeck episode, I think Kate Mulgrew had fun playing Queen Arachnia. The photonic beings only regardling other photonics as being alive is a fun idea and I like how it forces the crew to play along
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
Let's talk Star Trek Voyager some more. Season 5, episode 12 "Bride of Chaotica". While Tom Paris plays Captain Proton on the holodeck, Voyager finds itself trapped in a rift that contains photonic beings who get attacked by the Captain Proton's nemesis Chaotica
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
I appreciate that there are no easy answers here and the Doctor has to push through this on his own over months.
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
The reveal being that the Doctor had to make a choice between two patients and let one die, so his ethical subroutines essentially went into meltdown is great sci-fi.
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
S05E11 "Latent Image" is one of the best episodes this season. A doctor episode (of course!). The concept of the Doctor discovering his memory files were altered is a fun cold open
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
Not to mention that Tuvok is also at risk from the Devore inspections. The cat and mouse relationship between Janeway and Kashyk was fun. Some real Gul Dukat and Kira energy. I saw the twist a mile away, but it was still fun.
#startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts
Time for more #startrekhottakes #VoyagerThoughts with S05E10 "Counterpoint". This was a fun one with Voyager smuggling telepaths through a sector of space that has outlawed telepaths. Not sure hwo this ISN'T violating the prime directive but still a fun episode.
Not a strong entry, but I love a good allegory. Also Tom stays an ensign for another season and a half I think.

Next is "30 days" which opens with Tom Paris in the brig, demoted to ensign. This plays out a lot like the TNG episode "Suspicions" Where the lead is retelling their story as a log entry as a framing device

It's a bit of a bummer that we don't subvert expectations on the Cardassian, but it turns into an excellent metaphor for the ethics of medical discoveries made in concentration camps. The Doctor must contend with getting a solution from Space Mengele
#startrekhottakes
#voyagerthoughts
There is skepticism in the crew that a Cardassian can be trusted. The Doctor argues that this mans scientific acumen should matter and just because he's Cardassian he isn't automatically evil. *Narrator: But he was evil*

Season 5 episode 8 "Nothing Human" is one of the better episodes. B'Elanna is put into a coma by an alien scorpion and the Doctor uses a Hologram of a famed Cardassioan exobiologist to look for a solution.

Long overdue #startrekhottakes #voyagerthoughts
I'm at the end of season 6 but I need to update some posts for season 5 still!
I think this series has "good bones" if that makes sense

#startrekhottakes
Apparently the cheat code for engagement on this site is hot takes about Starfleet Academy.
I'm going to post about each episode in a little more detail soon.
I think my main complaints are more about art direction and make up, and producer interference.

#startrekhottakes
Anyway, Jay-Den Kragg being a Klingon that wants to be a doctor, is a good concept that pulls on a loose thread that was barely touched in the TNG years. Namely that not all Klingons can be warriors. I hope they can do more character focused episodes like this
#startrekhottakes
#trektalk
And they seem to forget the lore sometimes, like Tarima Sadal is supposed to be notable for her psychic powers, and they imply all Betazoids are empath, but that was only Diana Troy because she was half human. Her mother read people's minds all the time...
#startrekhottakes
#trektalk
I feel like part of the joy of Trek is building on the connective tissue of what came before, but there seems to be this need to overcomplicate.

Charon alien
I know people will say that the makeup team was bored and just wanted to evolve the design, but I dunno they also choose to have Charon in the background. So we can have accurate aliens from TOS but not TNG?
#startrekhottakes
#trektalk
Weird Ferenghi
They were willing to embrace some of the silliness of TOS in a way that New Trek seems afraid to embrace the TNG era.
You can't just have a Ferenghi in the background, it's gotta be dialed up to eleven with weird ears, or a Ferenghi / Romulan?

I spent over a year posting about TNG, Strange New Worlds and Voyager, but my one off the cuff post about Starfleet academy is the one that gets heat.
If you are just discovering me now you can check out my #VoyagerThoughts and #startrekhottakes
It's another convoluted revenge plot against the Borg. I think my favourite part of this was Naomi Wildman deciding to idolize Seven of Nine. Very cute stuff. 21/21
That's all for now
#startrekhottakes
#voyagerthoughts
"Infinite Regress" was a fun one. Seven of Nine comes into contact with a Borg McGuffin that causes her to channel the personalities of other assimilated aliens. 20/21
This was a great vehicle for Jeri Ryan to flex her acting chops. You can tell she's having fun
#startrekhottakes
#voyagerthoughts
This was some peak Star Trek time travel bullshit. The whole episode is about taking actions to erase the actions of the episode. Levar Burton shows up as Geordie LaForge sent to protect the timeline. 19/21
#startrekhottakes

Fifteen years later Harry, Chakotay and Chakotays girlfriend travel back to the Voyager crash site and recover the Doctor. Then they violate the temporal laws and send a message back in time to avert the disaster 18/21
#startrekhottakes
#voyagerthoughts
"Timeless" is a mess. Harry builds a slipstream engine and when they test it out it destroys Voyager but Chakotay and Harry are ahead in the Delta flyer and get home safe 17/21

#voyagerthoughts
I dunno I get that she's a kid, but it sure seems like a weird choice to lie to this girl. If her mom dies, isn't that going to be more traumatic? Anyways, happy endings for all, so not a bad episode 16/21
#startrekhottakes
#voyagerthoughts
Naomi's mom is on an away mission she might not survive (though there are too many regular cast members with her for me to worry too much). But the crew take turns spending time with Naomi, and debating if they should tell her about her mom 15/21
