#Botanicalillustration of two ripe #peapoda, showing the #peas inside where one of the pea pods has split open along its' sutures. The peas are still attached to the plant with their stalk, so are paired. They are a rich bright green colour with highlights on both the peas lined up in the open pod, and on the bumps on the outside of the pod where the swelling peas inside cause it to hit the light.

Watercolour to accompany my blog of the Fabaceae or pea family (also known as the #Leguminosae or #legumes family)

#Everlasting #sweetpea #Lathyrus latifolius #botanicalillustration in #watercolour to accompany my blog of the #Fabaceae or #peafamily (also known as the #Leguminosae or #legumes family).

The illustration shows one pink-magenta flower in bloom with its standard spread out below the twinned wings and the keel like a pink blanket. It's on the end of a long petiole. Next to it is another petiole, this one bearing three leaves. these are oval and twinned, the third leaflet having developed into twining tendrils. Cut to white.

This is a #botanicalillustration of the #Kidney #Vetch #Anthyllis vulneraria.

It's completed in #watercolour by hand and accompanies my blog of the Fabaceae family, the peas (which is also known as the leguminaceae or legumes family).

The yellow flowers are in a furry raceme at the top of the plat, the inflorescence surrounded or framed by slightly elongate trifoliate leaves. It also shows stem leaves which consist of paired leaflets with one longer terminal leaflet. Lower down the plant, and also shown, are the basal leaves where the terminal leaflet is much enlarged and only a couple of paired leaflets appear. Cut to white.

This is an annotated botanical illustration of the Bitter #vetch #Lathyrus-linifolius. I'm using it to illustrate what a #stipule pair is, which is an identifying feature of the Fabaceae, or pea family. The stipules appear at the base of the compound leaf (which is made of 3 pairs of lanceolate leaflets, topped with a short tendril). They look a little like forward pointing hooks and en-sheath the main stem, continuing to be decurrent down it for a few centimetres. Two petioles emerge from the stipules. One with the leaf, and the other bearing a purple vetch flower as well as a mature, long vetch pod. This is brown and slender, laterally compressed. You can see the shape of the seeds within the pod. The flower turns to the left, and thus overlaps the leaflet which is on the right of the illustration. The vetch pod hands on the lower right.
