'We saw it all' At the gates of the Hay El-Zuhour elementary school, in the so-called "flower neighborhood," local women watched the somber procession pass by. They were among those who never left. "We saw it all. The drones, the shells, the rain of bullets, the militiamen who entered every house, who threatened you, looted you," said Hannan Adam, the sister of the late Abdelmoneim. During nearly two years under the rule of the RSF, these residents stayed holed up in their homes, never venturing "farther than the corner of the street." Without a doctor or a hospital, the neighborhood had become a place where people went to die. "When a body was lying on the ground, the soldiers would say, let it rot, the dogs will take care of it," she continued. Just a few streets away, a schoolteacher found a skeleton in the playground. "It was eaten by a mutt," he said, judging by sight alone. While the birds had returned to chirp in the neighborhood, not a single bark could be heard. Having grown accustomed to human flesh, the stray dogs had to be killed. A neighbor called out to the group wearing white coats. Along a wall, a mound stood out against the flat expanse of the vacant lot. The pickaxes began digging again into the loose earth. Soon, they struck a torn floral curtain, used as a shroud. "He was a young guy from the neighborhood, a 'shamassa' [a term used in Sudan to refer to street children], who had a leg injury. He died from it. We buried him here," the man said, offering no further details. At the end of 2024, a Sudanese research group reported that more than 60,000 people had died in Khartoum State alone during the first 14 months of the war. The exact human toll remains unknown, but could exceed 200,000 deaths. Just a short distance away, teams wearing helmets and Kevlar-reinforced suits were busy with a different kind of digging. At the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile, the El-Mugran area was a minefield. Here, once-flourishing gardens and amusement…

Staples of the Sudanese diet, such as sorghum and millet, have been unavailable in most markets, forcing people to survive on animal feed made of peanut shells. Now even that has become too expensive for most people because of constrained supplies. Heavy rains are cutting off roads, warring parties are blocking aid deliveries and farmers are reluctant to risk being killed while working the fields. The country is now in the middle of the long, dry period between harvests-from the middle of July to September. Famine could spread from six locations to 17, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, an initiative supported by the United Nations and major relief agencies, said recently.
