The most anti-nature president in US history comes after the hellbender in the French Broad River watershed, my home.

A fishing buddy on a river.
Smoked grayling.
People took special effort to invite me on rivers out of their busy schedules in the further north. I'm happy to have those experiences

It’s a lot of fun start my garden of fruits 🍉, vegetables 🥗, flowers 🌸🌼🌺 + herbs 🌿 this spring 🌻 I love gardening and encourage everyone to try it 🌿
Cheers 🌼🌸🌞🌸🌼

A hole in the ice where the winter nets drop in the lake.
Our rescue service training. A person holds ladders while another climbs.
Most people nowadays do not encounter hardship in the Nordics. Once you do that a bit, as part of society, you see why the culture is resilient
I’m not perfect and will not run again in politics, but I’ve seen it.

A bus on a rural road.
The trusty town bus works even when it’s -30°C. Currently the snow has melted a month before average. 3.5 € to Joensuu 26 km away. A must-have during oil crises.
Someone just brought an e-bike in, interesting.

Who benefits?
It’s always good to ask that question when states directly support oil consumption, during crises and regular growth episodes (those seem intermittent in modernity)
#Sufficiency
It's pretty shocking how the Goliath civilisations (extreme wealth and income inequalities, state violence, expansionist wars and resource hoarding) - relate to what we are experiencing at the moment in the world.
The decision-making infrastructure for fairness isn't there.
#Sufficiency
Not saying it in hindsight: we’ve known about the climate crisis for ages, had climate policies in the EU and still increased emissions from transport since 1990 up to 2025.
How about regulation for the next fossil fuel crisis so that we don’t have to once again state the obvious?
#Sufficiency
”But Jessica Granlund of Malax, south of Vaasa on Finland's west coast, is not among those worried about price pressures. She and her family are largely self‑sufficient.”
No relation, but this is common in North Karelia. Especially in the countryside.

#Sufficiency happens when it has to.
Lue luontoa viikko Joensuussa.
All sorts of nature events in Joensuu today, including a lecture about #Sufficiency and music.
Nature protection and climate mitigation can both occasionally produce results that are objectively good, but unfair and ephemeral due to deregulation.
Equality is a social challenge, but the results tend to be more permanent and happen at scale because the benefits get shared.
#Sufficiency
(The municipalities and e.g. Church have a lot to say about it too in terms of the forests)
Regulation and #Sufficiency
A perch caught from my fish traps.
A huge pot full of chanterelles.
Blueberries.
I'm sure it won't come down to it, but if there is a food crisis, North Karelians have a few tricks up our sleeve. Everyone's Rights guarantee free foraging. The lake fishing permit costs about 50 euros per year.
#Sufficiency by e-MTB 🤠
Recomposing consumption in mobility, nutrition, housing, goods and services. Reduced flying and private driving, more public transport, better diets and less food waste, more shared services and less luxury consumption, etc.
Sufficiency would have been a great response to climate heating. We can still make these changes to mitigate the crises caused by fossil fuel addiction and increasing socio-economic inequality.

8. Avoid air travel where alternative options exist
”Reducing business flights can quickly ease pressure on jet fuel markets.”
Some in the climate scene have been talking about this for years.
#Sufficiency
I'm pointing out tracks in the snow.
I got invited to fish the Royal estate on Emån in Sweden and skied the Alps when I lived in Genève for my master's thesis in WTO law.
Yet I ended up in rural North Karelia, where the rivers are set free, and mobility is both affordable and clean.
#Sufficiency
Why did the climate scene hate carbon footprints so much?
If more people would have bought heat pumps, switched to electric mobility and a healthier diet, their lives would have improved while energy security increased.
#Sufficiency
A duckboard over peatlands.
Go easy on the world. It is so old that our species has no recollection of ever existing when these features were formed.
Maybe some saw God in it, some did not. I'm happy to be Karelian in modernity. The world can be nice if you ease on the extraction, just a little bit.
#Sufficiency
Landscape-scale nature restoration, deep electrification of transport in a fair manner and protection of old-growth forests are my favourite topics to post about. If you're a new follower.
Besides that, it's mostly #Sufficiency in theory and practice.

"The North Karelia Project’s objective was to make the region’s inhabitants smoke less and eat healthier food. This was transformed into a national public-health project."
The modern iteration promotes active mobility.

"According to Salminen-Tuomaala, recent surveys suggest that the region has seen an increase in people with depression, which could be related to poor dietary and exercise habits and resulting weight control issues."
#Sufficiency would systematically change these things.

If you want to combine some of the harder forms of #Sufficiency in the Northeast, switch the motor off.
The bike is heavy but it still moves. Range becomes rather unlimited with that. Need to test this out with a full load. If it works in the 50-70 km daily range, I'm fine for life.
I’m not thinking about degrowth when I follow the new Finnish dietary guidelines, book a cheap electric train with integrated bus tickets to Helsinki or roll around town on dedicated cycling lanes to nice trails in the woods.
It’s regular life in North Karelia.
#Sufficiency
My forest skis on the lake shore.
My fly rods on a bonfire.
It takes at least three years to gain the basic survival skills year-round in the Northeast.
You have to start small, nearby safe places and build the capability up gradually.
Nowadays people watch influencers go far alone and emulate them by buying expensive gear and a flight here.
#Sufficiency
'Degrowth' or such doesn't always escape Academia, so I try to talk about what sufficiency would look like for the average person living in a region that shares resources, has Everyone's Rights in nature and functional transport system for all modes.
#Sufficiency
Joensuu Trails on the map.
Joensuu has, in total, over 200 kilometres of trails, so I'm not going to get bored with that anytime soon!
There is also a Bike Park in my town.

A river flows in a forest landscape.
The Café Rento on the Pielisjoki River in July. Many cyclists have arrived. There is a solar panel on the cafe hut.
Mixed natural birch and spruce forest.
The sufficiency approach to tourism is to live in a place where everything you need is within the range of say, an e-MTB. My region has trout rapids, a nice city and a few of the last natural forests of southern Finland.
#Sufficiency in #NorthKarelia 🙂
#Sufficiency looks at all the sectors that have to be sorted out for science-based net-zero targets, not only electricity production. If you are finding transport difficult, try diets and wider land use issues on top!
