Got asked whilst walking to Hema today about the ski bag 'What have you got in there a body or something?' which I abruptly said yes to and then explained it was fencing gear and then made a thrusting motion. #Hema #Swordcialists
#swordcialists
Got asked about what was in my ski bag yesterday as I was headed to the hall for Hema 'The last person who asked' got an awkward laugh, maybe not the best work. I on the other hand cackled at their bewildered expression. #Hema #Swordcialists
Buying water so I have a drink for Hema guy behind the till 'What's that?' I'm oblivious for a moment 'Oh, sports equipment' 'For what?' 'Fencing I go to the club after work'
I may one day get away without someone asking what's in the ski bag, but it won't be today 🤣 #Hema #Swordcialists
Do I know anyone who does Hema in or around Leeds in the UK? I ask as @rikworth.bsky.social is looking for a club. Leeds Armoury one exists but they couldn't find a contact for them other than FB which I assume they don't have. Cheers, people #hema #Swordcialists
And again 'What have you got in there then' 'Three longwords' 'Fencing?' 'yep' 😂 #Hema #Swordcialists
Always a fun question when I have my Ski bag with me at the cafe before work on Hema days. 'What's that?' 'My longsword' 'what?' 'my longsword I do Hema, historic European martial arts' looking forward to it, always eager for more practice sparring. #Hema #Swordcialists
The falchion is a type of European, single-edged medieval sword characterized by a broad blade that is optimized for powerful cuts. It appeared in various forms from the 13th to the 16th century and essentially combined the cutting power of an axe with the handling and versatility of a sword. The common misconception though is that they were heavy cumbersome awkward axe-like things. But they are not, they are surprisingly thin and agile. Specs below. 650mm blade 40mm at the guard swells to 100mm at the widest point Distal taper approximately 5mm at the guard to 1.2 at the belly Leather bound grip 90mm long with bronze pommel total length 800mm Weight 950grams Balances 190mm from the guard
Said blunt falchion by Blue Dog Forge out of Carlisle. It was intended to be a Conyers Falchion, but the spec was a bit off. So it became a slightly shorter lighter one. The Conyers Falchion is likely what the Vorpal blade from the Jabberwocky was based on. #Hema #Swordcialists
A Malleus Martialis, Todesca longsword, rested against the wall in the flat, tip on the cardboard on the floor. It is quite long and fairly thin in profile, has a blue cord wrap on the grip, a plain crossguard, and a pear shaped pommel.
I have a Todesca, and after about an hour swinging it about in the garden I can say it's everything I thought it would be, light, responsive, nimble and beautiful. Now she needs a name, but that'll come in time. #Hema #Swordcialists
The image has a light grey background, at the centre of the image is a longsword. It has a handle long enough for two hands to grip, the pommel (counterweight of sorts on the end of the grip) is pear shaped, the grip itself is a royal blue (the grip is waisted in simplest explanation it bulges around the mid point, to let you index and feel the grip and hold it easily) the blade is 101cm long and has a re-enforced rounded tip to make it safe for Hema with adequate protection. The makers mark unless I'm mistaken is on the Ricasso. The metal on the longsword shines nicely in the image and I'm sure if will be polished or at least have a nice shine. The crossguard is straight across and unadorned, plain steel functional and pretty. The blade has a Ricasso in this case a flat piece before the diamond blade shape begins. For me personally this will let me place my thumb against it easily for better control in certain plays or master strikes. A Todesca longsword by Malleus Martialis, a company of arms and armour makers from Florence, Italy. Mine is as pictured, royal cord, 101cm blade with a ricasso, standard finish, pear shaped pommel, straight crossguard, diamond blade. Tech specs below. I went for config 1, royal cord, 101cm with ricasso. Config.1 | Pear pommel, straight cross, diamond blade Config.2 | Disc pommel, straight cross, diamond blade Period: 15th century Blade Typology: Type XVIIIb [Oakeshott], diamond cross section / with ricasso Overall Length: 130 – 135 cm Blade Length: 95 cm, 101 cm Max Blade Width: 3,5 cm Cross Width: 25 cm Grip Length: 25 cm pommel not included PoB: 7,5 cm from the cross Edge Thickness: 2 mm Weight: 1550 gr. (±50 gr.) Tip: Thickened Hardening: 50 HRC Flexibility: 12-13 kg | Medium Flex
