A Roland D-10 multi-timbral synthesizer from 1988 - a tweaked, more consumer-friendly but harder to program D-50 evolution. Below it, a Korg Karma - a Triton-class synthesizer that uses a clever algorithmic generative arranger system to produce backing and harmonies. It's too good for my limited skills!
63 little two-wire tact switches liberated from a Korg Karma, four PCBs and about two hours of work.
My quickly set up soldering station as I didn't want to solder in the garage - usually I need this kit to fix car parts. In the picture there is the corner of an Apple computer at each side, then from left to right an ancient multimeter, a hot air rework tool, a solder/desolder station with vacuum pump, and an overhead light. A spool of solder, some scattered switches, a silicone mat and a Roland D-10 panel PCB are in front of the tools.
A bonus restoration - I actually fixed two Wavestation A/Ds this month, but one wasn't a total success as it sold before I had finished diagnosing an issue with the RAM chips. This one has a new display, rack ears (not shown) and an less-scratched faceplate now, and I'm very happy to be able to play one again as it does sound different to the software one. Picture shows a reclaimed scaffold rack mount box containinh a UA Apollo, Wavestation, Lexicon effects and power distributor. An American license plate is attached with a rack screw, it says America's Dairy... In front of the Wavestation is Behringer's clone Prophet VS - the original being the ancestor of the Wavestation. 10 points if you're earwormed by the license plate.
What do these #synthesizers have in common?
I fixed them.
Roland D-10 originally spares to fix D-50; felt bad for it and repaired the keyboard PCBs, 8 buttons slow so replaced every switch on the front panel.
Korg Karma, 6 bad - 63 replaced. Disk drive and keys refurbed.
No room for them.

So Project Hail Mary is mostly trash but there is a scene at the start where Ryan Gosling teaches his class acoustics via the medium of what looks like some vintage synths and drum machines. Pretty sure I saw a TR909 in there and maybe a CR68 as well as a keyboard I couldn’t identify. #synthesizers

A home music studio with a Roland JV-50 and ASM hydrasynth on a stand, and a rackmount with mixers, Korg Wavestation A/D, Lexicon MPX-1 effects and Apolloz The Wavestation has a new white on black display.
Replacing the Wavestation's EL backlit old LCD with a new LED backlight and contrasty back on white makes it much easier to see. In the foreground there is a Behringer ProVS Mini - a tribute act to the Wavestation's ancestry.
39 little black switches replaced with 39 red ones, four pins on each of soldering but now the Roland D-10 works like new.

Korg Wavestation A/D now has a display visible from space - very worthwhile upgrade - and I replaced all 39 tact switches on my Roland D-10 - a practice run for doing 54 on my D-50 and then however many a Korg drama-llama Karma needs.

I don’t know what Roland’s marketing team was snorting when they came up with the ad campaign for 1983’s SH-101 but I guarantee it was high-grade shit! I love these ads & I legit miss the 80s. A truly batshit crazy time that I’m glad I experienced.
