Almost 15 years ago, Balabit had a campaign, stating that #syslog_ng could process 650k messages a second. Now I am happy to present 7 #million #EPS (events per second). Timing the announcement to April 1 is not a coincidence :-) #AprilFoolsDay

I have an aging, but fully functional #MacBook, which I bought for #syslog_ng testing. Homebrew no more fully supports old, #Intel-based Macs. This blog helps to compile the latest syslog-ng release on these old, but otherwise functional machines.

The March #syslog_ng #newsletter is now on-line:
- Version 4.11.0 of syslog-ng is now available
- Using #OpenSearch data streams in syslog-ng
- Changes in the syslog-ng #Elasticsearch destination
It is available at www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
With a bit of delay, but #syslog_ng 4.11.0 is now available in #Fedora #Rawhide. Support for #snmp is enabled again.
I also updated the #Fedora #Rawhide package, and according to the syslog-ng page on #repology, it's already there: repology.org/project/sysl...
However, Rawhide still had #syslog_ng 4.10.2, when I checked a few minutes ago...
Version 4.11.0 of syslog-ng was released last week, and it is already available in #openSUSE #Tumbleweed!
#syslog_ng
Committed users compile #syslog_ng for themselves from source. However, most of us wait until a software is available as an easy-to-install package for our OS of choice. In this blog post you will see an overview on the available packages for syslog-ng 4.11.0. www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
Good news for #syslog_ng users on #FreeBSD. As you can also see on FreshPorts, the latest syslog-ng, version 4.11.0, is now also available in FreeBSD ports:
www.freshports.org/sysutils/sys...
Version 4.11.0 of #syslog_ng was released yesterday. I submitted changes to the #FreeBSD ports maintainer, but if you are impatient, you can already try this syslog-ng version from my test repo:

The main new feature is a #Kafka source.
I am happy to announce that version 4.11.0 of #syslog_ng is now available. The main attraction is the brand new #Kafka source, but there are many other smaller features and improvements, from syslog-ng contributors around the World.

Today it's #syslog_ng release day, so I'm wearing a syslog-ng t-shirt in the #OneIdentity Budapest office😊
The February #syslog_ng newsletter is now available on-line:
- The stats-exporter() now has all functionality of syslog-ng-ctl
- Using the blank() filter of syslog-ng
- How to test the syslog-ng #Kafka source by building the package yourself?
Read it at www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
Version 4.11 of #syslog_ng will feature a brand-new #Kafka source. While it is being tested and reviewed, we are working on reducing the number of open issues. What should be #fixed next in syslog-ng?
www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
Reading files and #monitoring directories became a lot more efficient in recent #syslog_ng releases. However, it is also needed manual configuration. Version 4.11 of syslog-ng can automatically configure the optimal setting for both.
www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
Version 4.10 of #syslog_ng introduced file size-based log rotation. Thanks to this, storage space is no longer filled with logs with the risk that you might not see older logs if the message rate is higher than expected.

The #syslog_ng 4.11 release is coming soon. Thousands of automatic tests run before each source code commit, but nothing can replace real-world hands-on tests.
Help us testing #elasticsearch & #OpenSearch data-streams, #Kafka source, #cmake fixes & much more!

The syslog-ng stats-exporter() allows you to collect #syslog_ng statistics using #Prometheus. Version 4.10 of syslog-ng added options to ensure that all related options of syslog-ng-ctl are now available in stats-exporter() too.

The upcoming #syslog_ng release will come with a brand new #Kafka source.
Help us to make sure that syslog-ng is tested with a wide variety of Kafka versions and settings. Luckily, compiling syslog-ng with the Kafka source is easy:

Is there anyone still using #HDFS? Not just with #syslog_ng, but at all. I'm curious, as the HDFS destination is the last #Java-based driver in syslog-ng.

Nobody responded to my related posts for years, so 4.11 will be the last release to have it
Terrace party anyone? 😉 First day in the office this year, and I got this wonderful view when arrived.
I am back after a long #vacation. If you need an urgent response from me about #syslog_ng or anything, send it now (again). Or we can discuss it #IRL on our terrace 🥶
My last working day this year. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year using my all time favorite greeting card :-)
I'll be back with #syslog_ng news and blogs next year.

Recently, one of our power users contributed #OpenSearch data streams support to #syslog_ng, which reminded me to also do some minimal testing on the latest OpenSearch release with syslog-ng. TL;DR: both worked just fine.

The December syslog-ng newsletter is now available on-line:
- File size-based #log #rotation in syslog-ng
- #Syslog_ng release packages for RHEL & Co.
- Nightly syslog-ng RPM packages for #RHEL & Co.
You can read it at www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
One of the most requested syslog-ng feature was file size based log rotation. It is now available as part of the #syslog_ng 4.10 release:

#Kafka source is coming to #syslog_ng! It is still under development, but you can already easily #test it by using syslog-ng's package build system. You can have it up and running in less than half an hour. It is stable and fast!
www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/...
The next #syslog_ng release will feature a brand new Kafka source. You can already test this if you do not mind building the syslog-ng package yourself. Luckily it's easy and does not require developer knowledge:

#Kafka #LogManagement
Version 15.0 of #FreeBSD was released yesterday. As usual, I installed it next day and started #syslog_ng on it:
Dec 3 14:37:08 fb15 syslog-ng[3358]: syslog-ng starting up; version='4.10.1'
It's time to migrate my syslog-ng test environment to this FreeBSD release 😉
My #Turris Omnia #Linux #router is 9 years old, but still receiving updates regularly. My favorite detail from the last update e-mail:
• Updated package syslog-ng from version 4.7.1-1 to version 4.10.2-r1
#syslog_ng #LogManagement
A long-waited feature for #syslog_ng, the #Kafka source, is getting ready soon. The development is still in progress, but you can already try it, and it is worth the effort. How? Using the very same tool the syslog-ng #testing and release process relies on.
