Heading off to spring break. When we get back, my student teacher wanted to know if he could do a comp Sci unit with the kids do a week. I told him, absolutely. #teach180 #edusky
#Teach180 Day 146
AP practiced problems with particles curving in magnetic fields. Selected through crossed fields, etc.
Physics had a build day for their electric house project. We collected a bunch of boxes, they used canary cutters, wire strippers, tape, paper, motors, old holiday lights, etc.🎢🧪
Day 134 Physical Sci - did the crater lab with fine dirt, marble, steel ball, and bocce ball. Great weather today so able to do it outside! Graphed data in @desmos.com
#iteachphysics #teach180
So Thursday, we made goblin war horns to talk about acoustics, waves and energy transfer while letting the kids work through a variety of experimental setups. #teach180 #edusky
#Teach180 Day 145
Physics learned about "electrical energy sellers" (power companies), how electricity gets to our homes through step up/down transformers and the different ways we calculate power. They learned how to calculate the cost of using different appliances and the kWh unit. 🧪🎢
#Teach180 Day 144
AP had the second half of their Circuits test, an RC circuits focused FRQ. While many have pieced together some of the larger interlocking concepts by this time of year, many are still in survival mode learning concepts short term and not able to apply them to anything new. 😮💨🧪🎢
Day 133 Physical Sci - how do we know how planets form? Focused on craters today. Prepping simple crater lab, ran out of sand so took some time for students to dig out some fine dirt

Day 132 Physics - continued density with focus on finding density of irregular objects. Started with rock identification based on density. Then asked if soda cans are made from pure aluminum, and challenge of determining their volume #iteachphysics #teach180
Day 132 Physical Sci - Gave a reading on the formation of the solar system and broke down the steps paragraph by paragraph. Students cut out steps and arranged them in notebooks as we went through the process. Watched a clip from history channel #iteachphysics #teach180
#Teach180 Day 143 cont
Physics was introduced to their Series-Parallel circuit project, aka the Electric House project. Lots of excitement about their designs but the first hurdle is figuring out how to make the three independent circuits with one battery.
#teach180 Day 143
AP had the MC part of their circuits test today, 20 MC in 40 minutes. Students used to be able to do that and the FRQ in one ~hour period but post Covid timing has been a lot more difficult. Extending the time also takes more class days, in an already packed course. 🙃
🎢🧪
Day 131 Physical Sci - Explored #Stellarium and did some see-think-wonder and identify patterns.
Talked about galactic address and distances of our solar system
Remaining time did some solar system trivia
#iteachphysics #teach180
docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Day 131 Physics - Review of density. Had Ss measure and put density cubes in order of density and which would float in water.
Did density problems before we jump to archimedes and buoyancy
Goal of this topic is to create a concrete mini boat that floats +carry weight
#iteachphysics #teach180
#teach180 Day 142
AP practiced RC circuits some more, many have been avoiding learning the derivation and just crossing their fingers they won't be asked to do it.
Physics had a lab practical to find the resistance of an unknown resistors hidden in a film canister. They have to get within 10%. 🧪🎢
Day 130 physics & physical Sci - physics students analyzed their lab data and answered CER question: should pipes in homes be as wide as possible?
Physical Sci finished star life cycle posters

docs.google.com/document/d/1...
#teach180 Day 141
We had a schoolwide LipDub so we had reduced class periods and extra excitability. AP used a Falstad simulation to investigate RC circuits, they will collect digital data to produce the classic graphs.
Physics used @phetsims.bsky.social to build series & parallel circuits.
🎢🧪
A pot covered in foil with a spoon on top sitting on a hot plate from a chemistry lab
Day 141 was the last day before spring break! I put together some documents calling out vocab in each lesson for the remaining units. Also joined a lunch potluck the sci teachers at one HS had for a colleague with a baby on the way! Someone got creative warming their dish. #Teach180
#Teach180 Day 140
AP did an observation lab I got from @rhettallain.bsky.social. A 1F capacitor and some mini bulbs to observe the current changing in different RC circuits as shown by the bulb brightness. Its really great for discussing cap behavior at t=0 and t=♾️ or at least 5RC. 🎢🧪
Day 128 Physics - Bernoulli and Venturi effect lab measuring pipe diameter vs pressure. Love DIYing lab materials and then plugging #vernier sensors into them to make it quantitative. #iteachphysics #teach180
A copy of the book Why Don't Students Like School? by Daniel Willingham
A woman in glasses and an N95 mask wearing a t-shirt that says "smash particles and patriarchy"
Day 140 I read tomorrow's chapter for our team book study of Willingham's Why Don't Students Like School? Teachers at a school I support also invited me to join their science shirt Thursday group photo, so I made the obvious choice for my shirt today. #Teach180
#teach180 Day 139
Physics learned about series & parallel circuits than used that to analyze the data they collected on series & parallel circuits yesterday. Some groups still had some data to collect. My student teacher is learning how to pace students and keep them on track. 🧪🎢
Day 128 Physical Sci - Last day of conferences and it was a late one! In class students continued working on life cycle of star posters #iteachphysics #teach180 docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Day 139 was lots of meetings! Next year, we will have a few teachers in 6th grade sci who have a K-6 license and teaching experience, but no experience in science. A couple meetings involved brainstorming how we can be proactive this spring to ensure they have a good fall. #Teach180
#Teach180 Day 138
AP learned about RC circuits. Just seeing the derivation makes them 🤯
Block day will be better when they get to experiment with some.
Physics started building series and parallel labs. Data collection today, analysis to determine properties tomorrow. 🎢🧪
Day 126 & 127 Physics - another sub day where students continued their packets on fluids. Today is conference day so only half the periods, didn’t see physics students today! We do 2 days of conferences from 12-7:30 so I’m pooped #teach180
Day 138 dug into an upcoming 6th grade lesson to prep for when I meet with a couple teachers tomorrow to help them prepare to teach it. #Teach180
#teach180 Day 137
AP continued to practice Kirchoff's Laws with a Wheatstone Bridge example. Which means I spend the rest of the period assuring them that I wouldn't give them that circuit on the test and it is improbable that the College Board would either.
🎢🧪
Day 137 met with my boss and the SPED TOSA to talk through some data and think about what kinds of support might be useful in some of our science courses. #Teach180
#teach180 Day 136
AP learned about Kirchoff's Laws, multiple batteries in a circuits and had some practice. They got their series-parallel combo circuits quiz back today which was almost a reverse bell curve. Tons of kids got 100%, tons of kids obviously didn't know how to solve it. Retakes soon. 🧪🎢
