After years of trial and error, I have found that it’s helpful to paint a couple thin coats of glaze over areas with sgraffito patterns. This ensures that all the carved dot, dashes, and lines are fully glazed. I can’t wait to pull these pieces from the glaze kiln! #terrikern

Glazing starts tomorrow! After the bisque firing, I run my pieces under water to remove any kiln dust and sgraffito crumbs. I let the pieces dry overnight so the bisque is absorbent and holds the clear glaze as each painted layer is applied. #terrikern

When I’m doing sgraffito work, I clean the wet black underglaze off my clean up tool frequently. This allows me to keep carving clean lines and dots and keeps any underglaze carvings from falling back onto my piece.... #terrikern

On bone dry pieces of this size, I typically wait about 20 minutes in between underglazes coats. It takes longer if I’m painting on bisque ware. I am using @maycocolors Squash Yellow underglaze. #terrikern #terrikernstudios #underglazepainting #earthenwarepottery
