_**The Measure**_ startet mit dieser Ausgangslage: Eines Morgens wachen alle Bewohner der Erde auf und finden eine Box auf ihrer Türschwelle. In dieser Box liegt ein **Faden** , der die Länge ihres Lebens visualisieren soll. Dennoch handelt es sich bei diesem Buch nicht um Science-Fiction oder Fantasy. Eher ist es eine Geschichte, die zum **Nachdenken und Philosophieren** einlädt. Würde ich als Leser diese Box öffnen? Will ich die Länge meines eigenen Lebens wissen? Und welche Auswirkungen hat dieses Wissen auf die eigentliche Antwort? **Nikki Erlick** stellt diese Fragen und erzählt die Geschichte mithilfe der Sichtweisen einer Handvoll Personen im Laufe eines Jahres. Dabei greift sie verschiedene Auswirkungen auf die Gesellschaft auf: Kann ich mit jemandem ein Leben aufbauen, der oder die vielleicht nur noch wenige Jahre zu leben hat? Sollte ich eine Person mit einer kurzen Schnur einstellen? Was passiert, wenn ich nur Menschen mit langen Schnüren in eine Schlacht schicke? Wie verhält sich die Gesellschaft, wenn sie von einem **Populisten** gespalten wird? Und natürlich: _Würde ich diese Box öffnen wollen?_ Mir hat es Spaß gemacht, die „Regeln“ der Schnüre zu verstehen und herauszufinden, welchen Einfluss diese auf unser Leben haben könnten. Während und nach dem Lesen möchte man sich und andere gerne in ein Gespräch darüber verwickeln. Nicht so gefallen hat mir die **Charaktertiefe** einiger Figuren; beispielsweise ist ein Antagonist einfach nur ein schlechter Mensch, weil es die Geschichte so verlangt. Auch viele andere Figuren sind teils so flach und vorhersehbar, dass diese vermutlich nur auf Menschen spannend wirken, die noch nie ein Buch gelesen haben. Wer komplexe Charaktere und Storytwists erwartet, sollte seine Erwartungen hier vermutlich herunterschrauben. Man muss viele Dinge einfach akzeptieren - genauso wie die Menschen in diesem Buch einfach die **Boxen** (im Text stand „Würfel“, vermutlich waren die Boxen gemeint) akzeptieren. **Kurz:** Die ganze Geschichte lebt von der **Idee der Schnüre** , und man merkt, dass die Autorin viel Spaß dabei hatte, den potenziellen Auswirkungen auf die Gesellschaft nachzugehen. Und auch wenn ich mir hier noch etwas mehr Tiefe erwartet hätte, hat mir das, was ich gelesen habe, Freude bereitet. Wer Lust auf eine Geschichte mit einem **spannenden Ansatz** hat, macht mit _The Measure_ nichts falsch.
